Band history

The beginnings (1995–1999)

Little is known about the early years of Mannheim's sons. Two important members of Mannheim's sons, Michael Herberger and Xavier Naidoo , already knew each other from the musical production "The Musical Project".

The breakthrough with Zion (2000-2003)

On March 1st, 2000, their first single was released, We haven't done you anything , but it missed the charts. It went better with the second single, Geh vonvon , which was released on October 9th. It rose to number 2 on the charts. On November 27th they released their debut album Zion , which went straight to number 4 and went platinum. With your luck is close to my heart and The Power of the Sound was released in 2001 with two more singles, which however could not celebrate any notable chart successes.

Noiz and live album (2004-2006)

With perhaps the first single was released on 17 May 2004 from her second studio album. With 9th place, it became her second top 10 hit. Only 4 weeks later they released the album Noiz , which jumped to number 1 immediately. It got a total of 6 platinum (D-AT-CH). The double single Dein Leben / Babylon System came out on August 20th. The third single and Wenn ein Lied , released on December 13, became the band's biggest hit to date, peaking at number 2 and going gold. With the fourth and final single, Wenn du Schläfst , released in May 2005, they supported the work of World Vision Germany and encourage their fans to take action themselves: “Raise your voice against poverty!” On July 25, 2005, their first live album came out Power of the Sound on the market, which immediately made it to number 1. It contained 8 songs each from Zion and 11 songs from Noiz .

Sampler and MTV Unplugged (2007-2008)

On August 31, 2007, Sons, Moon and Stars were released, a sampler on which each member could contribute their own song. A year later, on September 19, 2008, they released the MTV unplugged double album Wettsingen in Schwetzingen , half of which consisted of their songs and the other half of solo songs by Xavier Naidoo . Like the only single The World Hasn't Seen Before , it reached number 1.

IZ ON and the barricades of Eden (2009–2011)

The first single Iz On from their third studio album came out on June 26, 2009 (number 15). The studio album of the same name followed two weeks later and reached number 3. The second release I want only your voice was released on August 28th and reached number 13. If you could hear me was the third and final single release and missed a chart entry. On April 8, 2011 they released the single Is it true (Aim High) , which was followed a month later by the fourth studio album Barricades of Eden . It immediately rose to number 2 on the charts. The second single Freedom (July 2011), dedicated the group Amnesty International . Amnesty International, together with the sons of Mannheim, organized a video campaign to mark the 50th anniversary of the human rights organization. In December 2011 the third and final single Für dich was released , but it only reached number 98.

ESC preliminary decision and ElyZion (2012-2014)

From the soundtrack of the movie “ Heiter bis wolkig” , the song Gesucht & Found was released as a single on August 31, 2012. In their only week in the chart, they only managed 51st place. In the preliminary decision of the ESC 2013 "Our Song for Malmö" they reached third place with the song One Love . In the charts, however, only number 56. It was the last single by the Sons of Mannheim to hit the charts. On February 21, 2014, the fifth studio album ElyZion was released , which made it to number 9.

Best-Of and MannHeim (2015-2017)

On March 27, 2015, they released their first best-of album EvoluZion - 20 Years , which made it to number 7 and was awarded gold. The sixth studio album MannHeim , released on April 21, 2017 , entered the charts at number 6. The controversial song Marionetten reached number 56 in the charts for one week, only through downloads.

The new sons (2018-today)

Major personnel changes have taken place at the sons since the beginning of 2018. The founding members Xavier Naidoo, Michael Herberger and Billy Davis left the band and with Karim Amun and Giuseppe "Gastone" Porrello two new singers were accepted into the collective. The single Moral was released on June 26, 2020 as a harbinger of their seventh studio album .

criticism

The song Armageddon is on the Söhne Mannheims' debut album, Zion (2000) . According to the song, the end times with their warlike events have already begun. Artistically this is expressed through “aggressive, hard and pulsating music”. The song warns the listeners to draw the appropriate consequences of the nearness of the end of the world and to pray to God for mercy. Xavier Naidoo said that he saw a close connection between the Middle East conflict taking place in Israel, particularly in Jerusalem, and Armageddon as the site of an end-time struggle .

The album MannHeim caused criticism, according to which some of the lyrics, especially in the piece Marionetten , contained references to conspiracy theories , hidden calls for vigilante justice and violence, and passages that could be interpreted as anti-Semitic. The band stated that it was an exaggerated appeal to reflect on the abuse of politics. She distanced herself from racism and anti-Semitism in interviews and live concerts. That is why one also takes part in projects such as “ Rock against the Right ” or “ School without Racism ” and plays concerts in Israel.
