Uwe "Banton" Schäfer (* 1965 or 1966 in Lage (Lippe) ) is a German reggae singer. Musically, he is mostly true to roots reggae when he is active as the lead singer of the band Movements or as a solo artist.

Career

A record by Bob Marley , which a schoolmate played for him, aroused Uwe Schäfer's first interest in reggae, and the then 15-year-old's vacation in Jamaica strengthened it in 1981. He got the impetus to try it as a musician himself the following year during his next vacation on the Caribbean island, when he saw a performance by Yellowman . “ If he can do it as such a blatant outsider, why shouldn't I try it too? “, That's how he later remembered his thoughts. Together with some friends of Jamaican origin who had come to Germany as British soldiers, Schäfer entered the stage of the “Neon” club in Steinhagen in 1984 as a singer , they sang patois in the Jamaican dialect of the popular riddims at the time . His friends soon gave him the nickname Banton, a Jamaican name for a deejay that is full of lyrics.

Uwe Banton joined Junior Mandingo's band One Vibe in 1992 and gained a lot of stage experience with this group, despite the short time until the separation. In the summer of 1993, Uwe Banton gathered musicians himself, they founded a band and called themselves Movements. Uwe Banton composed, wrote and interpreted most of the songs as lead singer. From 1994 they made a name for themselves in the German reggae scene with many appearances. A first album , One Earth , came out in 1996, followed by the EP Rastaman in 1998 . In 1999 Jah Meek joined Movements, Uwe Banton and he from then on shared singing and text writing. Uwe Banton, Jah Meek and Movements played in front of a wider audience after they met Xavier Naidoo in 2000 and supported the sons of Mannheim on the Zion tour. In 2003 the next Movements album His Majesty's Works was released . By then, Uwe Banton and Movements had already performed at many of the larger reggae festivals in Germany, such as Summerjam , Chiemsee Reggae Summer and Splash! .

Uwe Banton's first solo production began to develop in 2004 when he recorded the single Jah Roots on Riddim Too Long by Ganjaman , his label colleague at Mkzwo . The record released the following year was a success and encouraged the recording of more songs. At the end of 2006 the time had come, the first solo album was complete. Uwe Banton then sang on riddims from House of Riddim , the Sharp Ax Band, Culcha Candela , Stonerock Productions and the Oneness Band , among others . The record was rounded off with a guest appearance by Black Dillinger on Hail the man and the German title Kommt, Seht, Hört, sung together with Ganjaman, who was also mainly responsible for the production and mixing of the album.
