The MTV Europe Music Awards 2002 were presented on November 14, 2002 at Palau Sant Jordi , Barcelona , Catalonia in Spain . It was the 9th presentation of the award and the first in Spain. The moderator was P.Diddy , who wore a t-shirt to remember Jam Master Jay , who was murdered a few days earlier .
As in previous years, the regional nominations were expanded. In addition to the regional nominations for Germany, France, Denmark, Italy, the Nordic countries, Poland, Spain, Russia, the United Kingdom and Ireland, there was also a category for artists from Romania . Another new addition was the award for “Best Hard Rock”.
The winner of the evening was the American rapper Eminem with three EMAs. It also won the hip-hop award for the second time in a row. For the second time in a row, Jennifer Lopez won the award in the Best Female category .
Moby , who won the Web Award introduced last year, used the award to add his beef with Eminem. This was previously carried out publicly via the Eminem hit Without Me , whereupon Moby expressed the assumption that the rapper was "gay". When receiving the award, he said:
“I wish Eminem well. I have nothing but peace and respect for Eminem. "
“I wish Eminem all the best. I have the greatest respect for him. "
