El Canto del Loco

El Canto del Loco (Eng: "The song of the crazy") was a Spanish pop-punk band that was founded in 1994 in Madrid by singers Daniel Martín and Iván Ganchegui . In 2005 she won the MTV Europe Music Award in the category "Best Spanish Artist" (German "Best Spanish Artist").

Band history

The history of El Canto del Loco began in 1994 when Dani Martín studied at the Escuela de Interpretación de Cristina Rota in Madrid, where he met the guitarist Iván Ganchegui. The school is named after the Argentinian actress Cristina Rota, who lives in Spain . They were enthusiasts of the Spanish music group Radio Futura and in particular their title El canto del gallo (German "The Song of the Rooster "), the content of which led to the name of their group in 1994 "El Canto del Loco". At that time, the formation consisted of a female drummer, a bassist and another guitarist. In a theater school they attended, they met the other later band members and began their first rehearsals as a band.

Due to problems, the quartet briefly broke up, but quickly reunited. One day before their first concert, David Otero, Dani's cousin, joined the group as a replacement for the guitarist who had left the band. After Daniel had met Alejandro "Jandro" Velázquez, the son of a friend of his parents' friends, at a flamenco festival, he soon became the band's new drummer. The bass player was replaced by José María "Chema" Ruiz.

The band recorded their first demo tape in a small, independent studio in just 48 hours. Shortly afterwards, the producer Pedro del Moral made the band an offer from the Sony BMG label .

Her first album, "El Canto del Loco" was released in 2000 and sold around 80,000 times. Two years later the second album "A Contracorriente" was released. It received good reviews because it looked much more mature and of better quality. The song of the same name, which was released as a single from this album, is one of the band's greatest successes.

After Iván Ganchegui left "El Canto del Loco" in May 2003, the third studio album, "Estados de Ánimo", was released. It is a compilation of 12 songs that signify the band's success across the borders of Spain .

After hundreds of concerts in Spain and Latin America , the band released their fourth album, "Zapatillas", in June 2005, which achieved the highest sales figures to date. In the same year they went on tour with the Spanish band Hombres G and played in front of more than 56,000 visitors at the Estadio Vicente Calderón in Madrid.

Three years later, on April 1st, 2008 her album "Personas" was released, the first single of which was "Eres tonto!" is. In 2010 the band announced their breakup.
