The Eminem Show ( English for: " The Eminem Show ") is the fourth solo album by the American rapper Eminem . It was released on May 26, 2002 on the labels Aftermath Entertainment and Interscope Records and as the first own release on Eminem's label Shady Records . The album is regarded by many critics as one of the best rap albums of all time , alongside its predecessor The Marshall Mathers LP . For more than ten million copies sold, it was awarded a diamond record in the United States in 2011, making it one of the most commercially successful rap albums.

content

The main difference between the album and its predecessors is that the lyrics are no longer so aggressive. Although controversial topics such as races in hip-hop ( White America ), criticism of the US government and terrorism ( Square Dance ) and contempt for women ( Drips , Superman ) are dealt with, the move away from horrorcore rap and Eminems gives the album a boost serious and personal manner of presentation (the song Hailie's Song , for example, is dedicated to the love for his daughter) a slightly softer tone. There are also songs about Eminem's childhood and bad relationship with his mother ( Cleanin 'Out My Closet ), his status as a rap superstar ( Sing for the Moment , ' Till I Collapse ) and how he got his soul for money and fame had to sell ( Say Goodbye Hollywood ). The Track Soldier processes Eminem's attack on a bouncer in 2000 and his subsequent conviction. Without Me is a typical all-round blow to other celebrities (e.g. Moby , Elvis Presley , Limp Bizkit ), whereas Say What You Say specializes in Jermaine Dupri . The title Business describes the collaboration between Eminem and Dr. Dre and in When the Music Stops are criticized for failing to grasp the difference between music and real life when it comes to the role model role of rappers. The final song, My Dad's Gone Crazy, is full of irony and exaggeration.

Production and samples

The album is the first to be largely produced by Eminem himself. The beats for Square Dance , Soldier , Say Goodbye Hollywood , Drips , Superman , Hailie's Song and 'Till I Collapse are all his own. Dr. Dre was only responsible for the productions for the songs Business , Say What You Say and My Dad's Gone Crazy , although he acted as executive producer . Jeff Bass produced the beat for Cleanin 'Out My Closet with Eminem and co-produced Eminem on the songs White America , Without Me and Sing for the Moment . The D12 -member Denaun Porter assisted Eminem at the Beat to When The Music Stops .

Four songs contain elements from pieces by other artists. The song Without Me includes samples of Buffalo Gales by Malcolm McLaren , Its Gonna Be Such A Beautiful Day by The Moments and Rap Name by Obie Trice . In Sing for the Moment , the song Dream On is sampled by Aerosmith . Hailie's song features elements from While My Guitar Gently Weeps by The Beatles and 'Till I Collapse samples We Will Rock You by Queen .

Guest Posts

Six songs on the album contain a guest contribution. Rapper Obie Trice , who was signed to Eminem's label Shady Records two years earlier , appears as a feature on Drips . The R&B singer Dina Rae , who was already featured on the rapper's first two solo albums on track 13, has a guest contribution here again in the same position ( Superman ). Eminem's rap crew D12 is involved in When the Music Stops . Eminem's mentor is also Dr. Dre represented on the Disstrack Say What You Say and rapper Nate Dogg contributed the refrain to 'Till I Collapse . The voice of Eminem's daughter Hailie Jade can be heard on the song My Dad's Gone Crazy . Eminem's friend Gary Kozlowski, his manager Paul Rosenberg and Steve Berman also play in various skits.

The album received mostly positive reviews. The Metacritic site calculated an average of 75% from 20 reviews from English-language media.

  • laut.de gave The Eminem Show four out of a possible five points. The record is described as completely successful with only a few weaker pieces:

“A performance that has a lot to offer. Fully loaded with twenty Eminem in all its facets: ironic, humorous, sarcastic, all-round dissenting, cursing, settling accounts with politics and one's own family past. The way is what you would expect from the bad boy: cheeky, bold, insulting, offensive and direct, Eminem in its purest form. [...] The album has a very large format in terms of production and versatility. Overall, the tracks are slow, with deep, booming, sometimes sluggish, hard hitting, almost threatening beats, which are hypnotic in places and provide a certain automatic nodding. "

- Excerpt from the review by laut.de.
  • Die Zeit (issue 24/2002) describes the album as very provocative and describes Eminem as a verbal gunman:

“They are undoubtedly well done, these walks to the limit of pain. Evil is not as one-dimensional as it is with the recently often and often cited heavy metal band Slipknot, apart from baseball bats and horror masks, it knows suspense, refinement, know-how. When the curtain for the Eminem Show opens, children's laughter resounds like from the houses of a well-kept suburb, you know with the fearfulness of a cinema viewer that the idyll is about to be seriously disturbed. And when the staccato of the voices sets in, it has style as well as flow. In addition to the black traditions of rap, all processes of advanced text production can be demonstrated, from multi-perspective storytelling to the stream of consciousness. "
