Shady Records is an American music label that was founded in 1999 by the rapper Eminem and his manager Paul Rosenberg and exclusively contracts hip-hop artists. The name is derived from Eminem's artistic alter ego Slim Shady . Shady Records is closely associated with Interscope and Dr. Dres label Aftermath Entertainment . It belongs to the Universal Music Group . In total, the label has sold over 100 million albums. The label's most successful album is The Eminem Show, with around 27 million copies sold worldwide.
Label history
When the label was founded in 1999, Eminem's rap group D12 was signed and they have released two albums through Shady Records. In 2000 the Detroit rapper Obie Trice followed , who also released two albums on the label. Two years later, 50 Cent was signed to Shady Records. Along with Eminem, this played a key role in making Shady Records one of the most successful hip-hop labels in the world. The repertoire was expanded by Eminem with his own fashion line called Shady Collection . Shortly after 50 cents, Stat Quo was signed in 2003. This left the label, however, as did Bobby Creekwater, who was engaged in 2005, after several years without an album release.
In 2004 Eminem opened the uncensored hip-hop radio station Shade45 on Sirius XM ( Sirius Satellite Radio ), on which he and the rappers, who are under contract with Shady Records, as well as the DJs from Shady Records, record and comment on songs. From 2006 to 2011, the rapper Cashis , who only released an EP on the label, was under contract with Shady Records. While Obie Trice left the label in 2008, it was possible to announce the engagement of the rap group Slaughterhouse and the rapper Yelawolf in early 2011 , both of which have now released an album on Shady Records. In addition to the rappers, the beat producers Jeff Bass , Mr. Porter , Luis Resto and Rikanatti are under contract with the label.
On February 20, 2014, 50 Cent announced that he was no longer under contract with Shady Records.
To mark the label's 15th anniversary, the compilation album Shady XV was released on November 24, 2014 , which includes best-of singles as well as new material from Eminem, D12, Yelawolf, Slaughterhouse and Bad Meets Evil .
On March 3, 2017, Shady Records announced that it would accept the Griselda Ink label as a sub-label and sign the rappers Westside Gunn and Conway. In addition, the rapper Boogie from Compton was signed on October 11, 2017 .
