Before I Self Destruct received mostly average to positive ratings from critics. The side Metacritic calculated from 15 Reviews of English-language media an average of 62%.

Alexander Engelen from laut.de rated the album with three out of a possible five points. Thanks to a possible “career end” on Before I Self Destruct, 50 Cent has more to say than on its predecessor Curtis and “never mince words as ever.” Above all, the various producers of the songs convinced the created a "threatening sound backdrop". Nevertheless, you “can't get rid of the feeling that the explosive nature of the situation has not left the apparently invulnerable rapper without a trace. Often the tirades and self-adulation do not sound detached, but forced. ”The“ cheesy ”single Baby by Me could also have been dispensed with.
