from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Willie Hutch (* 6. December 1944 in Los Angeles , California ; † 19th September 2005 in Dallas , Texas , as Willie McKinley Hutchinson ) was an American singer, guitarist, songwriter and music producer .

Life

Hutch was born in Los Angeles and grew up in Dallas , where he began his musical career as a singer with The Ambassadors. After high school , he released his debut single Love Has Put Me Down in 1964 . The debut album Soul Portrait was released by RCA in 1969, followed by the Season for Love album by the same label in 1970 .

Hutch was also a songwriter for the Detroit record label Motown . He wrote songs for the Jackson Five , Diana Ross , Marvin Gaye , Smokey Robinson , Jr. Walker , the Four Tops and Aretha Franklin , among others . The first big hit was I'll Be There for The Jackson Five in 1970 . Other well-known songs were Got to Be There and Never Can Say Goodbye . In 1973, Motown signed Hutch as an interpreter. He contributed the score to The Mack (1973) and Foxy Brown (1974)

Willie Hutch released a total of eight albums on Motown in 1977. During this time, 12 songs made their way onto the Billboard R&B charts, including the most successful Brother's Gonna Work It Out and Slick (both in 1973 number 18) and Love Power (1976 number 8). By 2002, six more albums had been released on changing labels, but commercial success waned.

Hutch died in his apartment on September 19, 2005 at the age of 60. He was buried in the Restland Memorial Park in Dallas.
