background

Music from and Inspired by the Motion Picture 8 Mile consists of 8 Mile songs that were new at the time the film was released . These come from Eminem, rappers who were signed to his music label Shady Records , commercially and underground rappers, as well as female R&B singers.

Through some appearances on the album and especially the single Wanksta (number 13 in the Billboard Charts ) 50 Cent gained first notoriety before he made his breakthrough with Get Rich or Die Tryin ' a year later .

The soundtrack received mostly positive reviews from critics. The side Metacritic calculated from 13 Reviews of English-language media is a section of 74%.

The All Music Guide warned against considering the sampler an "Eminem album", but highlighted the five songs that Eminem is involved in. These would show progress from The Eminem Show , both technically and musically . Overall, he certified that most of the tracks on Music from and Inspired by the Motion Picture 8 Mile were of very high quality and rated the album with four out of five points.

The critic of the e-zine laut.de was astonished that “the songs by the rap heavyweights Jay-Z and Nas curiously cannot compete with the Eminem pieces.” From the instrumentals of the pieces, he felt like The Eminem Show remembered and gave the album three out of five.

RapReviews.com criticizes the lack of variety on the album. This primarily concerns the musical direction of the album, especially because of Eminem's mostly moderate productions. The website rates the work with 7.5 out of ten points.

"Overall this is one of the better rap related soundtracks to be released in a long time, although it drags a bit by the over-reliance on Shady Records stars [...] and on Eminem's beats in particular."

censorship

In addition to the explicit version of the soundtrack, a clean version was also pressed, in which the offensive words (e.g. "fuck", "fagot") were cut out. However, due to current events at the time (Eminem's conflict with Lynne Cheney , the wife of the then US Vice President Dick Cheney ), a line has also been [censored] in the normal version:

  • " I pipe down, when the [White House] gets wiped out, when I see that little [Cheney] dyke get sniped out " (Rap Game)

More Music from 8 Mile was received very positively, but did not get the same attention (even commercially) as Music from and Inspired by the Motion Picture 8 Mile . For the critic of the All Music Guide it is hard to imagine a better way of putting together “the absolute best of hardcore hip-hop” of that time, which is why he awards 4.5 out of five points.

laut.de regards the album as instructive for “Eminem teenagers” to learn something about the history of hip-hop outside the mainstream and rates it four out of five points.

The New Musical Express describes More Music from 8 Mile as "an incomparable entry into the mid-nineties scene with a focus on the all-conquering gangsta rap " and awards nine out of ten points.

"It's a surplus of riches, delivering far more than you've any right to expect of a second soundtrack album but it's also aa cool education in the mid-nineties hip hop scene and an intriguing examination of the roots of Eminem."
