Recovery ( English for: " recovery ") is the seventh solo album by the US rapper Eminem . It was released on June 18, 2010 on the labels Shady Records , Aftermath Entertainment and Interscope Records .
Prehistory and origin
Recovery was originally supposed to be released under the name Relapse 2 and appear in the same year as its predecessor . Relapse 2 should have included songs from the same recording period (2007–2009) as Relapse , since Eminem and Dr. Dre produced enough songs for two albums. Instead of an entire album, however, the rapper decided at the end of 2009 to only release seven of these songs with Relapse: Refill , which should bridge the period for fans until the successor is released. The release of the new album was postponed to 2010 and Eminem recorded completely new tracks because he wanted to make the album more emotional than its predecessor. On April 14, 2010, the rapper finally announced the release date via his Twitter account and also announced the name change to Recovery , which had become necessary due to the great thematic differences to Relapse and the collaboration with other producers. On the night of June 7th to 8th, 2010, the album was posted on the Internet by strangers.
content
In contrast to other Eminem albums, the album does not contain any skits , and the high proportion of samples and vocals in the choruses of the songs is striking. Many songs are very personal and profound and overall Recovery is more pop-heavy and emotional than its predecessors.
Cold Wind Blows is a typical first song in which Eminem raps that he's back and can never stop rapping. In the following track, Talkin '2 Myself , the rapper addresses his drug past and criticizes his previous albums Encore and Relapse , in which he was under the influence of intoxicants. The first single Not Afraid is also about Eminem's overcoming drug addiction and encourages all addicts to get clean too. WTP stands for White Trash Party and is a typical party song, while Almost Famous is about the pursuit of fame. In addition, songs are again included that are characterized by exaggeration and metaphors ( On Fire , Won't Back Down , Cinderella Man , Untitled ) and in So Bad the rapper lets his alter ego Slim Shady run wild once more by playing several women " happy ". The track No Love is about people who have disappointed Eminem and Lil Wayne in the past and let them down and therefore now no love can be expected. In Love the Way You Lie , the relationship is discussed a couple, which switch between love and hate and is torn while in SpaceBound the situation of a man is described who kills out of unrequited love for his girlfriend, because she wants to leave him . 25 to Life, on the other hand, is about Eminem's infinite love for hip-hop and seduction about the influence he has through his music. Going Through Changes is also a very personal song in which the rapper comes to terms with his past and promises his daughter eternal love. The tribute song You're Never Over is dedicated to his late friend and D12 member Proof . On the bonus tracks, Eminem raps about a dispute in a club that is escalating ( Ridaz ) and introduces the rap crew Slaughterhouse , who have been under contract with his label Shady Records since 2010 ( Session One ).
Production and samples
Recovery is the first Eminem album to feature a wide variety of different producers. Dr. However, Dre is executive producer as always , even though he only produced the beat for So Bad (in collaboration with Nick Brongers). DJ Khalil , on the other hand, is represented with four productions ( Talkin '2 Myself , Won't Back Down , 25 to Life , Almost Famous ). Just Blaze produced the songs Cold Wind Blows , No Love and You're Never Over . Not Afraid and Seduction were produced by Boi-1da. More beats were built by rather unknown producers. Supa Dups is responsible for the beat for WTP in collaboration with JG (co-producer) , Emile produced Going Through Changes and Script Shepherd Cinderella Man . D12 member Denaun Porter created the beat for On Fire , while Jim Jonsin provided the musical lining for Space Bound . Love the Way You Lie was produced by Alex da Kid . Havoc produced the hidden track Untitled in collaboration with Magnedo7 as a co-producer. Eminem acted as additional producer for the songs WTP and Not Afraid . The bonus songs were written by Dr. Dre ( Ridaz ) and Just Blaze ( Session One ) produced.
Six tracks on the album contain samples of songs by other artists. So contains Cold Wind Blows elements of Patriotic Song by The Gringo. On Fire samples Peace And Love by Mandrill , while Going Through Changes has a sample of Changes by Black Sabbath in the chorus . In addition, the song What Is Love by Haddaway is sampled on No Love . You're Never Over contains elements of Cry Little Sister by Gerard McMahon and Untitled is You Do not Own Me by Lesley Gore sampled.

The album was released with a reversible cover with two different motifs. The first illustration shows a country road on which Eminem is walking in the left part of the picture with his back turned to the viewer. At the top right of the picture there is the white lettering Recovery , whereby the O is shown as a white cross on a red background and the second E is reversed. The alternate cover shows Eminem in a glass-walled room reading a book on a sofa in front of a screen . In the background you can see the sky and high-rise buildings. The title is also at the top right of the picture.
Guest Posts
On the 17 songs of the album, Lil Wayne appears on No Love, the only rapper besides Eminem . The rather unknown R'n'B singer Kobe can be heard on the song Talkin '2 Myself . The artist Pink sings the chorus of the track Won't Back Down , while the singer Rihanna has a guest contribution on Love the Way You Lie . The other artists who can be heard in different tracks are only named in the booklet. Eminem worked with The New Royales singer Liz Rodrigues, who sings the choruses in the songs 25 to Life and Almost Famous and who wrote on Won't Back Down . In the song Space Bound Steve McEwan sings the chorus, in Seduction Sly Jordan does it. The rap crew Slaughterhouse can be heard on the bonus track Session One .

The reviews of recovery were mostly positive. The side Metacritic calculated from 28 reviews of English-language media is a section of 63%.
- At laut.de the album received four out of a possible five points. Eminem's rap technical top form is highlighted, while the pop-heavy nature of the record is somewhat criticized:
" With" Recovery "Eminem demands a lot from his audience. Does the rap public need a guest appearance from Pink? […] At least Pink's participation doesn't bother me any further, while in view of Rihanna's juicy yodelling in "Love The Way You Lie" I ask myself once again what the music world finds so irresistible about this doll. […] But the greatest stamina is required by the refrains: More was never sung, and there was seldom a bigger tearful shred potential with Eminem. […] In terms of rap, Eminem presents himself with "Recovery" not only absolutely on the cutting edge, but also in top personal form. […] Eminem flows, in an unmistakably pissed off tone, over such word boxes that it is a real pleasure. [...] Wherever Eminem's path leads, with "Recovery" things will definitely go uphill again. "
- Above all, the website Rap.de certifies Eminem's courage to make changes compared to his previous albums, which was worth it and awarded four out of five stars:
“ The typical format of the Eminem album no longer exists with“ Recovery ”. What the artist is trying to do here is an outwardly formal as well as musical upheaval, and - it works. [...] If another album with Dr. Dre beats, repeatedly warmed up stories about mother and ex-wife, the Xth Steve Berman and Ken Kaniff Skit was the solution? No, and so the first single “Not Afraid” already offers a welcome change. [...] The classic Eminem or Slim Shady moments are really very rare on "Recovery", almost nonexistent, [...] the deeper pieces clearly predominate, which is completely okay, since here the actual qualities of the Plate lying. [...] [The love of rap], and that is a point that unites all of the Detroiter's albums, radiates from every pore of "Recovery", only this time it radiates in a slightly different way, in a refreshingly different, one would like to say. "
