Dominic Bernard Patrick Luke Monaghan (born December 8, 1976 in Berlin , Germany ) is a British actor . He was best known for his role as Hobbit Meriadoc "Merry" Brandybock in the film adaptation of The Lord of the Rings by director Peter Jackson and as Charlie Pace in the series Lost .

Early life

Dominic Monaghan, actually Dominic Bernard Patrick Luke Monaghan, was born on December 8, 1976 in Berlin.

His parents, Maureen, a nurse, and Austin, a teacher, are from Manchester, England. Dominic has a one year older brother, Matthew Monaghan, who teaches biology in Spain, but also works as a singer and songwriter.

Monaghan lived in Berlin, Düsseldorf-Lohausen, Stuttgart and Münster. At the age of eleven he returned to Manchester with his family. His mother tongue is English, but he is also fluent in German.

He attended St. Anne's RC High School and Aquinas College, where he studied English literature, drama and geography.

Career

After his sophomore year at St. Anne's, he regularly appeared in school plays such as Oliver Twist , A Christmas Carol and Bugsy Malone . He later became a member of the Manchester Youth Theater. He started his career on the British stages and quickly made a name for himself. In 1996, at the age of 19, he was first seen on television. He performed well in Hetty Wainthropp Investigates . The British audience in particular was very impressed with him.

Monaghan's first movie role was the Hobbit Meriadoc "Merry" Brandybuck in Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings films. He originally auditioned for the role of Frodo. From 2004 to 2007 he played one of the lead roles as Charlie Pace in the mystery television series Lost .

In 2009 he appeared in a supporting role in X-Men Origins: Wolverine . He was also seen in the ABC series FlashForward . In the music video for Love the Way You Lie by Eminem and Rihanna , which was released in August 2010, Monaghan plays a loving couple with Megan Fox .

In the video game Quantum Break , released in 2016 , he gave the character William Joyce both his looks and his voice.

Personal

Monaghan is committed to nature and animal protection, including being an advertising face for PETA . He also appeared in the documentary series Wild Things with Dominic Monaghan . In the series, he visited unique places to look for the most dangerous animals in the world.

He has a tattoo on his right arm: the Elvish word for the number "nine" - an allusion to his involvement as one of the nine companions in The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Among them is also " Life Imitates Art " (German: "Life imitates art"), a quote from Oscar Wilde . There is a tattoo on his left arm: “ Living is easy with eyes closed ” (German: “It is easy to live with your eyes closed ”); a line from the Beatles song Strawberry Fields Forever . On his right forearm, he had the well-known tattoo artist Kat von D pierced the sentence “ Luminous beings are we, not this crude matter ” in 2010 . This comes from the character of Yoda from The Empire Strikes Back . The tattooing procedure was also filmed for the LA Ink reality series in episode 4x01.

From 2004 to 2009 he was in a relationship with the Canadian actress Evangeline Lilly , who starred alongside him in the television series Lost .
