Mute is a German - British dystopian Mystery - Thriller by Duncan Jones . It is in mute about the second part of a planned trilogy, with Moon began.
action
In the year 2052, the mute bartender Leo Beiler ekes out a dreary existence on the streets of Berlin. In the past 40 years, the metropolis has transformed into an urban juggernaut in which pure chaos reigns and you cannot trust anyone across the road. Despite all the dangers emanating from the dark figures that besiege Berlin's streets, Leo sets off every day anew into the dystopian urban jungle, always looking for the only person he loves, but has lost under tragic circumstances. His great love Naadirah disappeared some time ago and he is still looking for her today. A group of American surgeons, including Cactus Bill, appear to have a solution to Leo's problems.
production
Mute is based on a script by Duncan Jones and Mike Johnson / Michael Robert Johnson, which was later revised by Damon Peoples . Jones, who also directed the film, describes the film itself as a project close to his heart that could not be realized for a long time due to financial problems. It is in mute about the second part of a planned trilogy, with Moon had started from the year of 2009. However, Mute is in no way a continuation of Moon , according to Jens Balkenborg from Filmstarts , because even if Jones tells of a bleak future in both films, the story in Mute is completely new and plays in a completely new setting. In November 2015 it was announced that filming would begin in March 2016 and take place in Berlin.
The film was produced by Jones' long-time business partner Stuart Fenegan (Liberty Films), the German co-producers are Christoph Fisser and Carl Woebcken ( Studio Babelsberg AG ). The film received production funding of one million euros from the German Motion Picture Fund and 200,000 euros from Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg .
Paul Rudd can be seen in the film in the role of the military surgeon Cactus Bill. Seyneb Saleh plays Naadirah, Gilbert Owuor her boss Maksim. Robert Sheehan plays Luba, and Noel Clarke took on the role of Stuart.
The German synchronization was based on a dialogue book by Stefan Eckel and the dialogue direction by Engelbert von Nordhausen on behalf of Studio Hamburg Synchron GmbH . Benjamin Stöwe speaks Luba in the German version, Cornelia Waibel lends her voice to Naadirah, and Armin Schlagwein speaks Stuart.
Ultimately, the shooting started in October 2016. In addition to Berlin, the film was also shot in the co-producing Studio Babelsberg in Potsdam , including in the new outdoor setting of the film studio . Jones had lived in Berlin for a while as a child. Shooting ended on December 15, 2016.
The film was added to Netflix 's offer on February 23, 2018 .
reception
The film Mute received negative reactions. The Rotten Tomatoes website lists 85 professional reviews, only 21 percent of which are positive. The average rating was 4.4 / 10. At Metacritic , the film received a rating of 35/100 based on 24 reviews.
Brian Tallerico described Mute at RogerEbert.com as “a mishmash of ideas looking for a movie”. Amy Nichols of Uproxx wrote: “ Mute is more exciting as a bullet point list of absurdities than a two-hour film. Still, Jones keeps my attention. ”David Edelstein gave the film“ points for extreme arbitrariness ”.
Meanwhile, David Sims from The Atlantic said: “Rudd and Theroux do their best to have fun, but the miserable mood of the film actively fights against them at every point.” Bjarne Bock remarked for Serienjunkies.de : “Neither as a Sci -Fi-flick still as an action thriller can really convince Duncan Jones' latest work. ”According to Bock, the director lost his talent between his earlier films Source Code and Warcraft: The Beginning .
