The German Motion Picture Fund (GMPF) is an independent film funding program initiated by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, which was set up in 2015.

aims

The German Motion Picture Fund is an independent funding program on the initiative of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi), which funds the German film industry with 10 million euros annually and with which the competitiveness and innovative strength of Germany as a film location and the production of films are strengthened and series should be promoted as an economic and cultural asset.

The funding program is intended to provide a special incentive to implement digital filmmaking in Germany and helps to promote Germany as a film location better internationally and, in particular, to make it more attractive compared to other European countries. Further goals are to ensure the quality and diversity of German film and to promote the medium-sized film industry.

Type and amount of funding

The German Motion Picture Fund supports the production of internationally co-produced cinema films and series with a high production budget and high expenditure in Germany. The funding provides a special incentive to implement digital filmmaking in Germany. The annual funding volume of the German Motion Picture Fund is ten million euros, with the grant being granted as part of the project funding in the form of a non-repayable grant. The amount of the grant is based on the eligible German production costs and generally amounts to a maximum of 2.5 million euros, whereby the production costs of a cinema film must be at least 25 million euros and the production costs of a series must be at least 1.2 million euros per episode. In both cases, the German production costs must be at least 40 percent. In the case of films, the grant amounts to ten percent of the eligible German production costs. On request, the grant can be up to 20 percent if at least one million euros are spent on digital filmmaking in Germany. In the case of series, the grant amounts to 20 percent of the eligible German production costs. On application, the grant can amount to up to four million euros if the German production costs are at least 20 million euros and at least one million euros are used for digital filmmaking in Germany.
