action

Molly Moon lives as an orphan girl with her best friend Rocky in the ailing orphanage Hardwick House Orphanage. When she accidentally discovers a book about hypnosis, her life changes suddenly. However, the criminal Nockman is also after the book, as he intends to rob a bank with it to prove to his mother that he is also a genius criminal.

First Molly tries her new found skills on the house dog Petula, then on the nasty cook Edna and finally on the house manager Miss Adderstone herself. However, she needs more time for this trick and so misses the talent competition, where she wanted to perform with Rocky. He is so mad that he lets the Alabaster couple adopt him. Rocky goes to London with the family.

Desperate, Molly follows her best friend and finds accommodation in a four-star hotel in London using hypnosis. In addition to looking for her best friend, she beats child star Davina Nuttel and simply takes over the show of the arrogant, arrogant child star. Completely untalented in singing and dancing, she practices mass hypnosis. This is how she has a brilliant first broadcast of her show. But after the performance, she realizes that the whole thing was a mistake. She persuades her director to deal with Davina again, who has since undergone a change in character.

Reunited with Rocky, whose adoptive family wanted to send him to boarding school, she decides to return to the orphanage. But Nockman kidnaps Petula and forces Molly to a coup. They steal from the thieves of a jewel bank. But behind the two robbers is the plan of Nockman's mother Tracey, who Molly also needs to outsmart the iris scan of the jewel transporter. Nockman and Molly are locked up while Tracey and her accomplice load the jewels. But after a tip from Rocky, Molly manages to activate the iris scan a second time and she can lock the two real criminals in the transporter.

Nockman, who eventually helped them both, now becomes a friend of the two children. His mother is handed over to the police via hypnosis. Back at the orphanage, the good nurse finally took over the regiment. The librarian now reveals to Molly that she was responsible for ensuring that the book fell into the right hands.

Reviews

The film was received mostly negatively. On the US film site The Hollywood Reporter , it was criticized that the film lacks the charm of the original and that it is not interesting enough for the target audience. Scott Tobias saw it similarly on Variety.com , who saw a film that tries to swim with the Harry Potter wave, but at the same time is not modern enough to convince. Molly's transformation is too fast within her brief stardom. The acting of the villains is also very reminiscent of old Disney slapstick films. Last but not least, the selected songs are also an imposition.

On the children's film page Kinderfilmwelt mostly positive reviews.

“Molly Moon” is a children's book adaptation. And you can tell. There are too many stories in this one film. So the story in which Molly becomes a star seems to be interposed individually. Still, it's a beautiful, imaginative film about friendship that will end up getting you through even the worst of adventures. The girl who plays Molly is great. Just like the other actors. "
