Sasha Gray (also Sasha Gray , born Marina Ann Hantzis , born March 14, 1988 in Sacramento , California ) is an American actress , musician , DJ , writer and former porn actress .

biography

As the youngest of three children to Catholic parents, Sasha Gray grew up mostly with her mother. She was five when her parents divorced. Her mother taught her that her body was a temple, and her father admonished her that men would want only one thing of her; both made her curious. She attended Highlands High School in North Highlands , California. She was home-schooled and graduated from high school at 17, a year earlier than usual. She also received acting lessons between the ages of 12 and 18. She then worked as a waitress in a steak house in Sacramento. When she was 16, she started watching porn movies .

Porn career

At 17, Sasha Gray became interested in the activities of porn actresses and she researched their working conditions. Among other things, she contacted an actress via MySpace . When she had just turned 18, she moved to Los Angeles , signed a contract with an agent, and started her first porn movie two weeks later. Her first scene was group sex with Rocco Siffredi and others for the film Fashionistas Safado - The Challenge by John Stagliano . She chose her pseudonym after Sascha Konietzko, the singer of the band KMFDM , as well as after the novel Das Bildnis des Dorian Gray or the gray of the Kinsey scale .

Sasha Gray performed without bleached hair, tattoos , breast augmentation and intimate shaving , influencing the porn aesthetic of the 21st century. After making 80 porn movies, she said on the Tyra Banks Show that she would be willing to do anything on camera except sex with animals or children. In an interview given in 2011 after the end of her porn career, she said that her reputation in the industry also came from being willing to do things in front of the camera that even men would shy away from. There was nothing that shocked her, but there were things that made her disgusted . In Rolling Stone she was referred to as the " Dirtiest Girl in the World ", but also as an exception in the porn industry and as an intelligent woman with feminist features. She described her appearances in porn films as performance art , in which she used her voice and her body. Sasha Gray was particularly noticeable during porn filming because she spoke aggressively into the camera and also called for harsher and more humiliating treatments. She wanted to break through the fourth wall and give the "imaginary plot a touch of reality". The consuming men should be disturbed and, even after the consumption, stimulated to think.

In 2007 she won two AVN Awards , including one for Best Sex Scene with 19 other actors. In May 2007 she won the XRCO Award for "Best New Starlet". In 2008, Gray was listed in the August issue of the porn magazine Genesis in 6th place in the "Porn's-Hot-100" ranking of porn actors, in 2009 she took 1st place there.

On April 8, 2011, Gray announced her retirement from the porn industry. The reason she gave was that she did not like repetition and had therefore started to get bored with the activity. In 2008 she was portrayed by Jens Hoffmann along with other porn filmmakers in the documentary 9to5 - Days in Porn . At that time she was represented by the agent Mark Spiegler .

After being booked for minor roles in two feature films in 2008, she took on the lead role in Steven Soderbergh 's The Girlfriend Experience . The film illuminates the prostitute milieu from the perspective of a noble call girl (Chelsea), played by Sasha Gray with partly improvised dialogues. Soderbergh cast Gray because of her experience in depicting sexuality and because she always seems to control sex. In Grey's view, this wasn't something completely new to her, since porn is also part of popular culture .

In early 2010, Gray posed in a campaign by the animal welfare organization Peta for more birth control in dogs and cats.

From the seventh season, Sasha Gray took on a guest appearance in the HBO series Entourage over several episodes, she played herself in the process. The author said he had tailored the part specifically for Gray. The real role model for the storyline was two-and-a-half-men star Charlie Sheen , who had a relationship with the porn actress Ginger Lynn in the early 1990s .

Music career

In May 2009, she appeared on the album as a singer Aleph at Hallucinatory Mountain of Current 93 with. In 2008 she founded the experimental / industrial / dub music / art project aTelecine together with Pablo St. Francis. Her first EP, aVigillant Carpark , was released on the New York label Pendu Sound. She also worked on the song Pum Pum on Lee Perry's album Repentance . In 2018 she also released That's The Way (I Like It) with Raymond "Pig" Watts .

Gray also works as a DJ and publishes his own tracks etc. a. on SoundCloud .

In 2011, in connection with her exit from the porn industry, her photo book Neü Sex was published . The book contains Polaroid recordings and essayistic texts of her and documents her life in the last few years before she left the industry. The Ü in the title can be understood as an allusion to the language of Friedrich Nietzsche and the band Kraftwerk , both of which belong to Grey's areas of interest. The aesthetics of Facebook or Instagram can be attributed to the images in Neü Sex , which present a curious girl's sexual innocence .

Her erotic novel The Juliette Society was published in May 2013 . The novel is about the film student Catherine, whose partner does not satisfy her sexually. By discussing the film Belle de Jour - Beauty of the Day by Luis Buñuel , the protagonist's desire for submission is awakened. Through her fellow student Anna, Catherine comes into contact with a secret society of men who practice sadomasochistic practices. The main character willingly submits to these practices. When asked why she wrote the novel The Juliette Society , Sasha Gray replied in an interview with Spiegel Online on November 12, 2013: “That was my dream since I was 16 The 120 days of Sodom by Marquis de Sade devoured. That shocked me at the time, but it also confirmed the fantasies I had when I was twelve. All the confusing thoughts about my sexuality, desire and self-image that were buzzing through my head at the time have been sorted through this book. I had many questions that I could never have asked my parents. The book was my salvation. ”In the novel, Gray wants to express that in her opinion someone who willingly submits to himself is no longer an object , but an acting subject . Maximilian Probst reminds this story on the one hand of EL James ' Fifty Shades of Gray and on the other hand of Elfriede Jelinek's The Piano Player . Grey's work can be read as a counterpart to EL James' novel trilogy. From an artistic point of view, Grey's work moves between Shades of Gray and Jelinek's verbal acrobatics. The Juliette Society could - as a mixture of pornography and art - be described as "Punst". In the mirror , Phillip Ohmke, the background of the orgies depicted is reminiscent of Stanley Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut . The book is a typical coming-of-age story and a more realistic and dark version of Shades of Gray . For Dirk Schneider from Deutschlandradio , Grey's novel follows the well-trodden paths of erotic literature such as Shades of Gray and Wetlands .

The third volume Mismade Girl of the Juliette Scociety Trilogy was published in 2019 in German translation under the title X by Heyne Hardcore .

As a propaganda figure

During the war in Ukraine, users of the Два.ч (Dwa.tsch) platform provided a picture of Gray with the name " Саша Серова " ( Sascha Serowa , derived from the Russian word for English gray ) to test the gullibility of pro-Russian users and trolls , and the fictional story of a nurse who was killed with an ax by Ukrainian soldiers. A group promoting the Donetsk People's Republic , which was proclaimed by separatists , spread the story via the social network vk.com . Sasha Gray turned against this instrumentalization on Twitter ; She had previously only commented on Ukraine with the message “Stay strong Kiev” on the occasion of the 2014 Euromaidan protests.
