action

Iris, a young woman caring for her brother Raleigh, who has bone marrow cancer , cannot afford his treatment. Dr. Barden, the doctor who cares for Raleigh, introduces Iris to the noble ostensible philanthropist Shepard Lambrick, who makes her an offer: If she participates in a dinner game and wins, his charity foundation will pay for the cost of her brother's treatment and one Donors organize what Iris accepts.

When she arrives at Shepard Lambrick's country house, Iris meets his son Julian, the butler Bevans and the other participants: Lucas, the war veteran Travis, the wheelchair-sitting elderly Linda, the gambler Peter, Cal, Amy and the now abstinent alcoholic Conway .

When the food (including steak) is served, Iris points out that she is a vegetarian and refuses to eat. Lambrick sees this as an opportunity to start the game and offers her $ 10,000 if Iris eat the meat she agrees to. Shepard notices that Conway doesn't drink his wine, whereupon he reveals himself to be a former alcoholic. Shepard then offers him either $ 10,000 if he finishes the glass of wine or $ 50,000 if he drinks a whole carafe of Scottish whiskey . After a moment's hesitation, Conway opts for the whiskey.

After dinner is over, the actual game begins, which turns out to be a deadly version of the party game Would you rather . Before he reveals this to the guests, Shepard offers each participant one last chance to leave the house, which nobody accepts. The butler and former special agent Bevans brings an electric shock device with two headbands into the room, where electrodes are attached. Conway tries to escape, but is immediately shot by Bevans. In the first round, each player is provided with a headband and a remote control for the stun gun himself. The other headband is put on another player and you can now choose to give yourself or the other player a strong electric shock. Everyone survived this round, but Travis had a battle of words with Julian, who commented that it was a mistake.

In the second round, Iris is first given the choice of stabbing another player in the thigh with an ice pick or punching Travis three times with a sjambok . Travis tells Iris to whip him because the sting is rather life threatening. Lucas decides to hit Travis for the same reason. When it is Travis's turn he has the choice of stabbing Lucas or being hit three times by Bevans. He chooses the whip again. Then it's up to Peter who either has to hurt Linda or hit Travis again. Knowing that Travis will not survive further blows, he stabs Linda, but injures a large vein that immediately begins to bleed profusely. Linda herself then stabs Amy without hesitation, because she can't stand her and can't get up to hit Travis. A short time later, Linda bleeds to death and dies. Finally, Amy points out to everyone that it's a matter of survival and playing against each other, not with each other, and stabs Iris in the side with the ice ax. Cal agrees with Amy and decides to whip Travis again, which leads to his death.

The group then tries to escape and Cal is shot dead. Only Iris manages to escape from the room. She runs into the basement and is followed by Bevans. However, Julian finds her first and tries to rape her. She manages to push Julian in the knee with the ice ax and get away. Suddenly her Dr. Help Bard, who, it turns out, was a previous winner of the game, but now wants to put an end to the hustle and bustle after secretly breaking into the building. Before he can help Iris, however, he is shot by Bevans. This brings Iris back to the others.

The third round begins, in which you have to choose between the known and the unknown. The familiar thing is that Bevans submerges your head in a barrel of water for two minutes. The unknown is on the map that every player now receives, which, according to Shepard, can be relatively harmless, but also fatal. Peter starts by choosing the card. The symbol on the card means that he has to detonate a Chinese bullet in his hand. He realizes too late that it is dynamite and not an ordinary banger . Peter dies of cardiac arrest after his hand is torn off.

Lucas then also decides on the unknown card, which means that he has to cut open an eye with a razor blade . Iris decides on the barrel and barely survives it. Had she chosen the card, all of her teeth would have been extracted. Amy decides on the menu, which also leads to submerging in the barrel, but four minutes instead of just two. She dies without a chance after Bevans doesn't give her time to breathe before he goes into hiding.

When the fourth lap starts, only Iris and Lucas are left. Iris faces a choice between sparing Lucas and going home empty-handed, or killing Lucas with a dueling pistol and taking the money. Lucas begins by telling Iris why he is participating in this game in order to dissuade her from killing him. Iris, however, shoots him in the middle of a sentence. Shepard names Iris the winner and allows her to leave with the money. He also tells her that a donor has already been found for her brother.

Back home, Iris finds Raleigh apparently asleep in his bed and first washes the blood off in the shower. She later discovers that her brother took his own life from an overdose of his medication. The film ends when Iris bends over her brother's corpse and yells: "What did you do?"

reception

The film is partly attributed to the so-called torture porn genre, but is not a splatter film , although there are a number of bloody scenes to be seen here as well. However, they are not an end in themselves, as with other representatives of the genre, but rather logically accommodated in the plot.

The film received mixed reviews, however, the acting skills of Jeffrey Combs , who is experienced in the genre, will enhance the film according to the critics.

Margin notes

Jeffrey Combs was nominated for Best Actor at the Fright Meter Awards for this film .

The fictitious supposed charity foundation in the film bears the same name as one of the real production companies involved in the film ( The Lambrick Foundation ).

This film is one of the first attempts by former porn actress Sasha Gray to gain a foothold in traditional acting.

The character Lucas is not listed in the credits , instead Travis appears twice .
