Hippo whip
The original hippopotamus whips , also known as Sjambok ( South Africa ), Chicotte ( Congo ) or Kiboko ( East Africa ), were made from hippopotamus or rhinoceros skin because it is very hard-wearing. Due to species protection and price reasons, however, hard, elastic plastic is now often used.
Of animal tamers the elastic variant is preferred to use about 7 feet in length. There is a small leather ball at the top. This increases the force applied by the whip and is therefore particularly suitable for pachyderms .
The hippopotamus whip (Swahili: kiboko = hippopotamus) was u. a. used in the German colonies to carry out corporal punishment. The chicotte was also used for terrorism during the Belgians' Congo Abominations.
