André Brink (2007)

André Philippus Brink (born May 29, 1935 in Vrede ; † February 6, 2015 ; often André P. Brink ) was a South African writer , translator and literary scholar . He wrote in Afrikaans and English and is one of the most important writers in South Africa.

Life

André Brink was the first of four children of the teacher Aletta Brink and the magistrate (for example: magistrate) Daniel Brink. He was born in the small town of Vrede in the Orange Free State . The father was often transferred, so the family lived in many places. André Brink passed his matric at Lydenburg High School in Lydenburg and studied literature from 1953 to 1959 at the University of Potchefstroom . In 1959 he married for the first time. He lived in Paris from 1959 to 1961 , and also from 1967 to 1968. The Sharpeville massacre in 1960 made him a critic of the apartheid system. In 1961 he received his doctorate from the Sorbonne . From 1961 to 1980 he was a lecturer in Afrikaans and Dutch language literature at Rhodes University in Grahamstown . In 1962, together with Breyten Breytenbach and Ingrid Jonker, he founded the writers' association Die Sestigers (German: "The Sixties"), whose members wrote in Afrikaans and opposed apartheid . When the Sestigers split in 1968, he stuck to the thesis that art was political. Brink's novel Kennis van die Aand (1973) described the love of a white man for a black woman , which was then forbidden, and was the first text written in Afrikaans to be banned in South Africa. Brink then translated the novel into English and published it abroad. From then on he wrote his novels - with one exception - in both Afrikaans and English, so that they mostly appeared in two languages at the same time. In 1980 he was appointed professor of Afrikaans literature at Rhodes University. The ban on Kennis van die Aand was lifted in 1982. In July 1987 Brink was a member of a delegation from Buren who spoke to the leaders of the then banned African National Congress in Dakar, Senegal, at the Dakar conference about a democratic future in South Africa.

From 1991 to 2005 Brink was Honorary Professor in the Department of English Language and Literature at the University of Cape Town . While many of his early novels deal with the apartheid period, in some of his later works he depicts life in South Africa under the newly won democracy. So his novel is imaginings of Sand (German: sandcastles ) around the time of the first democratic election in 1994 . Praying Mantis (German: Kupidos Chronik ) deals with the life of the first pastor of the Khoikhoi in the 18th century. Brink's autobiography A Fork in the Road was published in 2009 . In addition to novels, Brink wrote numerous travelogues, plays, books for children and young people, literary reviews and essays . He also translated numerous books into Afrikaans, especially works of world literature.

Brink is one of the few Afrikaans-speaking authors who has received international attention. He has been nominated twice for the Booker Prize and has been discussed several times for the Nobel Prize in Literature . He received the CNA Literary Award three times , a South African literary prize. In 2003 he was awarded the Alan Paton Fiction Award . He received three honorary doctorates from South African universities and the Order of Ikhamanga in silver from the South African government .

Brink was married six times and had four children.

He died of thrombosis on a flight from Amsterdam to Cape Town in early February 2015 . He had previously received an honorary doctorate from the Université Catholique de Louvain in Belgium .
