Vrede is a city in the South African province of Free State . It is located in the Phumelela municipality in the Thabo Mofutsanyana district . The city is the seat of the municipal administration and had 1962 inhabitants according to the 2011 census. The neighboring township of Thembalihle had 15,727 inhabitants.

Vrede is located in the northeast of the Free State Province, around 30 kilometers southwest of the border with Mpumalanga Province . Vrede is located in the Highveld and is surrounded by hills. To the east of the center is the Thembalihle township.

history

The city was founded in 1863. For a long time there was no agreement on where the city should be built. At the end of the dispute, the city was given the Afrikaans name Vrede (German: peace). A large sandstone church of the Dutch Reformed Church of South Africa was built in the city.

Economy and Transport

Vrede is an agricultural center. From here maize, wheat, sheep and beef, wool, dairy products and poultry are transported. Vrede is located 20 kilometers east of the N3 national road . Roads lead from Vrede to the N3 and to Standerton , Volksrust and Newcastle . Vrede is the end of a railway line from Standerton, which is only operated in freight traffic. The train station is west of the city.

The Rooivleisfees (red meat festival) is celebrated annually. The Afrikaans-language music film Platteland was shot here and in the surrounding area.
