Phumelela ( English Phumelela Local Municipality ) is a local municipality in the Thabo Mofutsanyana District , Free State Province , South Africa. The administrative headquarters are in Vrede . John Tlokotsi Motaung is the mayor.

The community name is derived from the isiZulu word for “to be successful”.

In 2011 the community had 47,772 inhabitants. Of these, 91.6% were black and 7.3% were white.

The first language was 55.2% IsiZulu, 32% Sesotho , 7.4% Afrikaans and 1.2% English.
