history

Protest march 1913

The city was founded in 1888 near the site of the Battle of Majuba Hill , where the Boers were able to restore the independence of the Transvaal Republic from the British in 1881 . The city was called Volksrust because the soldiers of the Transvaal Army had rested here. In 1894 Paul Kruger and the Briton Sir Henry Loch signed the third Swaziland Convention on the Convention Bridge over the border river Grensspruit , which brought Swaziland under the control of the Transvaal for a short time . The Convention Bridge was later destroyed; the remains were declared a national monument.

During the Second Boer War , the British built a concentration camp in Volksrust, in which many Boers died. In 1904 Volksrust became a municipality . In 1913, Mahatma Gandhi organized a protest march for the rights of South Africans of Indian origin, which reached the then Transvaal in people's rust.

Economy and Transport

The city is an agricultural center. From here beef, dairy products, corn, millet, wool and sunflower oil are sold.

Volksrust is on the N11 , which runs north-south through Volksrust, and the R23, which meets the N11 when coming from Gauteng . Country roads lead to Vrede in the west and Wakkerstroom and Piet Retief in the east. Volksrust station is on the Johannesburg - Durban line (see also: Natal Main Line ) and is used for passenger and freight traffic. A railroad line used for freight traffic leads from Volksrust north to Bethal .
