Wakkerstroom ( Afrikaans , German: "Wacher Strom") is the second oldest city in the Mpumalanga Province in South Africa . The city was founded in 1859 and had 6,852 inhabitants in 2011.

Surname

The name is derived from uThaka , the isiZulu name for the river that flows nearby (German: "awake"). In Afrikaans it became the name Wakkerstroom .

economy

Sheep and cattle breeding are the main sources of income in the area around Wakkerstroom.

fauna

The Wakkerstrom area is now considered one of the best bird watching areas in South Africa. Here, among other things, allows ground woodpecker watch, but also the spur Lark and Finke lark and various bustards and cranes .
