In the 1910s there were several proposals to assign the species to another genus: Ernst Max Schottky classified it as Pasania maingayi in 1912 , and in 1916 the Japanese botanist Gen'ichi Koidzumi assigned the species differently as Synaedrys maingayi .

The German-American botanist Alfred Rehder finally classified the species in 1919 under the current name Lithocarpus maingayi in the genus Lithocarpus ; his contribution appeared in the first issue of his newly founded journal Journal of the Arnold Arboretum .
