description

One prize was given annually for prose or poetry works by South African writers who wrote in English or Afrikaans . Other languages spoken in South Africa were only taken into account in 1996, the last award year. Occasionally there were shared prizes or no winner in a category. From 1992 there was also a prize for the best debut. In 1996, the categories Creative Literature, Non-Fiction and Children's Literature (for example: “Creative Literature”, “Non-Fiction”, “Children's Book”) were awarded for works from the previous literary year. Breyten Breytenbach won the award five times; In 1983 he rejected it for political reasons. Nadine Gordimer , JM Coetzee , André Brink , Elisabeth Eybers , Henriette Grové and Chris Barnard have each received three awards. Ellen Kuzwayo was the first black woman to win the award in 1985.

The award ceremony took place in different places, for example in a dance hall in Sandton , the foyer of the Market Theater in Johannesburg or the Grahamstown Festival . The award was initiated by Philip Stein.
