Karel Schoeman
Karel Schoeman (born October 26, 1939 in Trompsburg , Orange Free State ; † May 1, 2017 in Bloemfontein ) was a South African, Afrikaans-speaking writer .
Life
Schoeman studied linguistics at the Universiteit van die Oranje-Vrystaat and then attended the Catholic seminary in Pretoria . In 1961 he became a member of the Order of the Franciscans in Ireland with the aim of becoming a priest. However, he did not take the vows , returned to South Africa after three years and studied library science in Bloemfontein. He then worked as a librarian in Amsterdam from 1968 to 1973 . After spending two years in Glasgow , he began writing books and stories. In 1983 he returned to South Africa and worked from then on in the South African Library, now the National Library of South Africa , in Cape Town , most recently as archivist .
In addition to his extensive work as a writer, he also worked as a translator, including from English, German, Russian and Irish Gaelic . Many of his publications cover the history of the Cape Colony .
Several of his works have been translated into German, English, French, Dutch and Russian, including Na die Geliefde Land, 'n Ander Land, Afskeid en Vertrek , Verliesfontein and Hierdie Lewe.
In 1999, when Nelson Mandela left the presidency , Schoeman was one of two South African writers to receive the State President Award. From around 2007 he lived in a nursing home in Bloemfontein. In 2014 he was considered a candidate for the Nobel Prize in Literature . On May 1, 2017, Schoeman died of suicide . In an open letter he stated that he did not want to be a burden to anyone in old age.
