The Prix ​​du Meilleur livre étranger is a major French literary prize that is awarded annually in the two categories of fiction and poetry (Roman ou poésie) and essay (Essai). This prize is awarded to foreign-language works that have been translated into French. The award was established in 1948 by the publisher Robert Carlier (1910–2002).

The German-speaking authors whose works were awarded this literary prize include Elias Canetti , Heinrich Böll , Robert Musil (posthumously), Günter Grass , Peter Härtling , Charles Lewinsky and Christoph Hein , as well as Margarete Buber-Neumann , Verena von in the fiction category Heyden-Rynsch, WG Sebald , Christoph Ransmayr and Wolfram Eilenberger in the essay category .
