Drago Jančar (2019)

Drago Jančar (born April 13, 1948 in Maribor , Yugoslavia ) is one of the most important contemporary Slovenian writers. In 1974 he was imprisoned in communist Yugoslavia for "hostile propaganda" and "journalistic disobedience".

Career

Jančar was awarded the Prešeren Prize , the most important literary prize in Slovenia, in 1993, the European Prize for Short Prose in 1994 , and the Jean Améry Prize for Essay Writing in 2007 . In 1998, Rauschen im Kopf was awarded the lavish Kresnik Prize as the best Slovenian novel of the year . In 2011 Jančar received the European Prize for Literature for Lifetime Achievement.

As part of the publication of his prose volume Sonntag in Mitterau in Edition Thanhäuser , he was a scholarship holder in Ottensheim to take part in the printing process and thus to become familiar with the craft of woodcutter, handwriter and book printer. Jančar lives in Ljubljana .

In 2020 he was awarded the Austrian State Prize for European Literature .
