Eduardo Halfon

Eduardo Halfon (born August 20, 1971 in Guatemala City ) is a Guatemalan writer.

Life

Eduardo Halfon comes from a Jewish family, the grandfather of the protagonist Eduardo Halfon in the novel The Polish Boxer (2008) was a Łódź Jew who survived the Litzmannstadt ghetto , the Sachsenhausen concentration camp and the Auschwitz extermination camp . He grew up in Guatemala and emigrated to the USA with his parents when he was ten . He studied industrial engineering at North Carolina State University and then returned to Guatemala, where he taught literature at the Universidad Francisco Marroquín for eight years . He lives in Nebraska .

Halfon's first novel Esto no es una pipa, Saturno was published in 2003. The novel examines the suicide of the 23-year-old Guatemalan painter Carlos Valenti in 1912 from different perspectives. The book title alludes to a surrealistic image . Halfon received the José María de Pereda Prize for short prose in Santander for the book La pirueta . In the novel Mañana nunca lo hablamos , published in 2011, he describes a childhood in violent Guatemala in the 1970s.

Halfon received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2011 for further work on his book El boxeador polaco , which is written in ten rounds . Preparatory work for this was published under the same title in 2008 and further parts in 2010 under the title La pirueta .

The French translation ( Deuils ) of Duelo was awarded the Prix ​​du Meilleur livre étranger in 2018 in the “Essay” category.
