Gonçalo Manuel Tavares (* 1970 in Luanda , Angola ) is a Portuguese writer who works as a novelist , playwright , poet and essayist and has been one of the most important Portuguese authors of his generation since his debut in 2001.

Life

Gonçalo M. Tavares was born in 1970 in Luanda, Angola (then still a Portuguese colony ), the son of a construction worker. He spent his childhood in Aveiro before moving to Lisbon at the age of 18 .

He is professor of philosophy with a focus on epistemology at the Technical University of Lisbon .

Gonçalo M. Tavares made his literary debut in 2001 with the volume of poetry Livro de Dança , and since then he has published more than 30 books in various genres, such as poetry, drama, novels, short stories, children's books, essays.

Tavares arranges his literature in series, of which "O Bairro" (The City District) and the novel tetralogy "O Reino" (The Empire) are the best known. "O Bairro" is gradually populating with well-known personalities from literary history ( Bertolt Brecht , Paul Valéry , Italo Calvino , Roberto Juarroz , Karl Kraus , Robert Walser , André Breton , TS Eliot , Emanuel Swedenborg ), which he paraphrases in volumes with short prose.

Many of his books have been translated into numerous languages.

So far, two novels are in German - Die Versehrten (original title: Jerusalém ) and Joseph Walser's machine (original title: A Máquina de Joseph Walser ) at the DVA - as well as the short prose volume Wasser, Hund, Pferd, Kopf (original title: Água, cão, cavalo, cabeça ) published by Der Apfel. The ten-volume cycle Das Viertel (original title: O Bairro ) has been published continuously by Edition Korrespondenzen since spring 2020.
