Michael Kegler

Michael Kegler (* 1967 in Gießen ) is a German literary translator from Portuguese , editor and literary critic .

Life

Kegler lived from the age of four to ten on an iron ore mine in Minas Gerais , the largest mining center in Brazil , where his father worked as a geologist . Together with the children of the miners in Congonhas do Campo he attended a tiny school. Kegler did his community service in a psychiatric clinic. He studied Romance studies at the Goethe University in Frankfurt and worked alongside his studies in Teo Ferrer de Mesquita's Portuguese bookstore “Centro do Livro” at the Konstablerwache (now in Bockenheim). He attended translation seminars with the philologist Ray-Güde Mertin , the great role model of all German and Portuguese translators who died in 2007.

Kegler has been translating from Portuguese since 1992. Since 2001 he has been running the Nova Cultura review website for literature and music from the Portuguese-speaking countries Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Portugal, São Tomé e Príncipe and Timor Lorosae, which is a continuation of the 1982 to 2000 publishing house Teo Ferrer de Mesquita (TFM) published “boletim” Nova Cultura understands. He is a member of the board of the Society for the Promotion of Literature from Africa, Asia and Latin America .

In 2014, Kegler and Marianne Gareis received the Straelen Translator Award from the Kunststiftung NRW for their translations from Brazilian Portuguese .

In 2016 he was awarded the International Hermann Hesse Prize together with the Brazilian writer Luiz Ruffato , whose work he translates . He lives in Diedenbergen near Hofheim am Taunus .
