Luiz Ruffato (born February 4, 1961 in Cataguases , Minas Gerais ) is a Brazilian writer .

Life

Ruffato initially worked as a salesman, textile worker and locksmith while studying journalism at the Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora (UFJF). He then worked as a journalist in São Paulo . Since his first novel, Eles eram muitos cavalos (German edition: There were many horses , 2012), which was published in its seventh edition in 2001 and 2010 , has been awarded the renowned Prêmio São Paulo of the Associação Paulista de Críticos de Arte (APCA) and the Machado-de -Assis-Prize of the Fundação Biblioteca Nacional , he is considered one of the most important contemporary Brazilian writers. In 2003 he stopped working as a journalist and since then has worked exclusively as a writer. In the daily press, however, he continues to work as a columnist and commentator, for example from 2013 to 2018 with a weekly column in the Brazilian edition of El País or since 2016 monthly in the football newspaper Chuteira FC .

His five-volume cycle of novels, Inferno provisório (German: Temporary Hell), written between 2005 and 2011, tells the story of Brazilian workers, immigrants and internal migrants. For the fifth volume of the novel cycle, Domingos sem deus , he was awarded the Premio Casa de las Américas in 2013 . In 2015 he received the Prêmio Jabuti for his first children's book A verdadeira estória do sapo Luiz , for which his novels have been nominated several times. In 2016 Companhia das Letras published a revised complete edition of the novel Inferno Provisório in one volume.

Together with Ana Maria Machado , Luiz Ruffato was the literary opening speaker at the 65th Frankfurt Book Fair 2013 with Brazil as the guest of honor. His courageous opening speech, which also addressed the open wounds of Brazilian society, caused a stir internationally. In 2016 he and his translator Michael Kegler received the International Hermann Hesse Prize. On May 2, 2019, he gave the "Democracy Lecture" of the papers for German and international politics on the subject of "Brazil, a new fascism?" At the Volksbühne in Berlin .

In addition to German, his works have also been translated into English, French, Spanish, Italian, Finnish and Macedonian.
