Publishing history

The publishing house was founded in 1986 by Luiz Schwarcz , who already had publishing experience from working at Editora Brasiliense , and his wife, the social anthropologist Lilia Moritz Schwarcz . Fernando Moreira Salles joined the publishing house three years later. Among the first four books published was the translation of the history work To the Finland Station by the American Edmund Wilson, a great sales success that laid the foundation for further publishing work. Lilia Moritz Schwarcz published a bestseller herself with her As barbas do Imperador (The Emperor's Beard). The best-selling work is the Portuguese translation of Sofies Welt by Jostein Gaarder with over 950,000 copies.

Companhia das Letras is now one of the most renowned Brazilian publishers. According to a survey by the specialist magazine Valor Econômico on July 23, 2012, Companhia das Letras was rated by critics, authors and experts as the best publisher ahead of Cosac Naify because of the high quality and the level of awareness of the publishers' authors .

With around 100 employees, around 200 books are published each year with an average print run of 4,500 copies.
