The Brazilian National Library ( Portuguese Biblioteca Nacional do Brasil , officially Fundação Biblioteca Nacional ) in Rio de Janeiro is the largest library in Latin America with 9 million media . In March 2013, the political scientist Renato Lessa , succeeding Galeno Amorim, was appointed President of the Brazilian National Library Foundation by the Minister of Culture Marta Suplicy .

One of the library's treasures is the Teresa Cristina Maria Collection on Brazilian history with over 21,000 photographs, which were included in the World Document Heritage in 2003 .

history

The library of the Portuguese royal family already had over 70,000 books when it suffered some destruction in the 1755 Lisbon earthquake . The remaining and increased stocks went with the escape of the court from the Napoleonic invasions in 1808 to the new capital Rio de Janeiro , in the Portuguese colony of Brazil. In 1810 the Biblioteca Nacional do Brasil was opened.

When the royal family returned to Portugal in April 1821, they took only a small part of the book collection with them, which since 1880 has been a separate collection as the Biblioteca da Ajuda , today part of the Portuguese National Library . Most of it remained in Rio de Janeiro, which became the capital of the Brazilian Empire when it gained independence in 1822 .

As the recipient of the Brazilian deposit copy and by adding other holdings, the library has grown steadily since then and is now the largest library in Latin America.
