Marta Suplicy (born March 18, 1945 in São Paulo , SP ) is a Brazilian politician of the Labor Party ( Partido dos Trabalhadores , 1981-2015), then of the MDB and since 2018 non-party. From 2001 to 2004 she was city ​​prefect of São Paulo , from 2011 to 2019 Federal Senator for the State of São Paulo and was in the meantime Brazil’s Minister of Culture from 2012 to 2014.

Life

Marta Teresa Smith de Vasconcelos , daughter of Luís Alfredo Smith de Vasconcelos, was born on March 18, 1945 in São Paulo. Her wealthy parents enabled her to study psychology at the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo and further training at Stanford University in 1973. She married the economics professor Eduardo Matarazzo Suplicy , but divorced him after her election victory in 2001 (she kept the well-known Surname) and married Luis Favre.

Suplicy made an early appearance as an activist, she founded several non-profit organizations on topics such as women's rights, education and consumer protection. In the 1980s she hosted an educational television show for women. Together with Clodovil Hernandes , she hosted the TV Mulher program in 1980 .

From March 3, 2007 to June 3, 2008, she was Brazil's Minister of Tourism in the government of Lula da Silva . In the 2010 Senate elections , she was elected Senator for her home state and took office on February 1, 2011. In the meantime, she was Minister of Culture in Dilma Rousseff's government from September 13, 2012 to November 11, 2014. In November 2014 she was re-elected as senator and represents her state together with Aloysio Nunes and José Serra (as of 2015).

One of her sons, Eduardo Smith de Vasconcelos Suplicy, better known by the stage name Supla , is a Brazilian musician.

Suplicy has published over 200 newspaper and magazine articles. A partial biography was published in 2008.
