The National Archives of Brazil , officially Portuguese Arquivo Nacional , is a state archive in Rio de Janeiro . It was founded on January 2, 1838 and is subordinate to the Ministry of Justice. It is housed in the building that housed the Brazilian mint Casa da Moeda do Brasil from 1868 to 1983 .

The National Archives are the central organ of the administration system for archival material (Sistema de Gestão de Documentos de Arquivo, SIGA). According to the Archives Act (Law 8.159) of January 8, 1991, it has the task of organizing the federal government's documentary heritage to make it accessible and to serve the state and the citizens.

The collection of the National Archives contains 55 km of text documents. 2,240,000 photographs and negatives; 27,000 illustrations, cartoons; 75,000 maps and plans; 7,000 discs and 2,000 magnetic audio tapes; 90,000 rolls of film and 12,000 magnetic tapes on video. It also has a library specializing in history, archives, information science, administrative law, and public management, with approximately 43,000 book titles and librettos, 900 newspapers, and 6,300 rare works.

The librarian Neide De Sordi has been the director since 2019.
