Litprom e. V. does lobby work for literature from Africa , Asia , Latin America and the Arab world . The association provides information on literary developments in the regions mentioned in various ways. Anita Djafari has been running the business since 2009, and Juergen Boos is the club's chairman . Litprom was founded in 1980 as the »Society for the Promotion of Literature from Africa, Asia and Latin America e. V. «founded. The seat of the association is Frankfurt am Main.

Mission statement

Litprom sees itself in the German-speaking area as a central agent for the circulation of literatures beyond the standard western realities and as a hub for international literary communication. The association brings authors, readers and literary institutions together, creating a platform for literary encounters in times of globalized text circulation.

The society was founded in 1980 by people professionally involved in literature, development aid organizations and the Frankfurt Book Fair .   • Promotion of translations of fiction works

Litprom has been the point of contact for promoting translations of fiction works from Africa, Asia and Latin America into German since 1984. The program aims to strengthen literary cultural exchange and promote the publication of contemporary literature. It is financed with funds from the Federal Foreign Office and the Swiss SüdKulturFonds. German and Swiss publishers can submit applications.

  • Publication of the »LiteraturNachrichten«

The LiteraturNachrichten Afrika - Asia - Latin America was published as an independent magazine until 2016. In 2017, the LiteraturNachrichten were converted into a four-page supplement for the daily newspaper taz . As such, it appeared quarterly in 2017 and 2018, and since 2019 it has been published every six months.

  • Creation of the best list: Weltempfänger , for which a jury chaired by Ilja Trojanow selects the seven best books in German translation by authors from Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Arab world four times a year

The »Weltempfänger« is a list of the best for literary translation that has been published four times a year since 2008. The jury made up of literary critics, writers and cultural journalists each selects seven titles and presents their selection with short texts.

  • Events: Literature Days, etc.

Every year in January the two-day festival »Literaturtage« takes place in Frankfurt. It brings authors from all over the world into conversation on a specific topic, most recently among others »Migration - Literatures without a permanent residence«. Litprom also organizes regular readings and is responsible for the world reception program at the Frankfurt Book Fair.

  • The "Other Literature Club"

Members of this literary club receive four times a year the work of an author from Africa, Asia, South America or the Arab world, which has often been translated into German for the first time. The non-profit initiative is organized in cooperation with artlink, Office for Cultural Cooperation.

  • Supervision of the "City of Refuge" program

The aim of the program is to accept foreign authors whose work is at risk for at least one year and to provide them with an apartment and a grant. The writer should be able to continue his work unhindered and be involved in the cultural life of the respective city. The cultural office of the city of Frankfurt has the project management of the program to Litprom e. V. transferred.

The online database contains more than 8,000 titles translated into German by writers from Asia, South America, Africa and the Arab world. All works can be searched in detail using the key words author, title, region, original language, translator and others.

LiBeraturpreis

The LiBeraturpreis has been awarded by Litprom since 2013 and presented in October at the Frankfurt Book Fair. The prize is awarded exclusively to women authors from Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Arab world. The prize was launched in 1987 by the LiBeraturpreis eV initiative, has been awarded by Litprom since 2013 and presented at the Frankfurt Book Fair.
