LiBeraturpreis

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The LiBeraturpreis is a literary prize that is awarded exclusively to women authors from Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Arab world.

history

From 1987 to 2012 it was awarded by the Association Initiative LiBeraturpreis in the Ecumenical Center Christ Church in Frankfurt am Main . Ingeborg Kaestner was the main reason for this initiative and has supported it for many years. Since 2013, the Litprom association has been responsible for the award under the direction of the Frankfurt Book Fair . The reason for the foundation of this award was, on the one hand, that in the discussion on development policy there is much talk of the material poverty of the countries of the South, but too little of their cultural wealth. On the other hand, the small number of translated works by authors from the countries mentioned was mentioned.

Until 2012, the prize was accompanied by prize money of 500 euros and an invitation to the Frankfurt Book Fair . Since 2013, the LiBeraturpreis has included prize money of 3,000 euros and an invitation to the Frankfurt Book Fair. In an online article by the Goethe-Institut that is no longer available on the internet , the LiBeraturpreis was given some importance as it draws attention to the cultural achievements of the so-called Third World . The vote on the award winner has been public since 2014 and is carried out online.

Since 2001, the LiBeraturpreis initiative has also awarded a sponsorship award in order to “discover” female authors for the German-speaking area, for whom no texts have yet been translated into German. The sponsorship award was linked to an invitation to the Leipzig Book Fair in order to attract the attention of the publishers.

The editor-in-chief of Deutsche Welle, Ines Pohl , is the patron of the LiBeraturpreis.
