In a monastery school she enjoyed a classical Catholic education; She then studied at the Universidad Iberoamericana and the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM).

From 1977 to 1979 she worked as the editor of the Diccionario del Español de México (Dictionary of Mexican Spanish) at the Colegio de México . In 1976 she received the Salvador Novo scholarship , which is awarded to young artists between the ages of 18 and 22. In 1979 she was awarded a scholarship from the Fondo Nacional para Actividades Sociales (FONAPAS) of the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes (INBA). In 1980 she founded a printing workshop called Taller Tres Sirenas , in which books were produced in small editions with artistic demands. In the same year she received a scholarship from the Centro Mexicano de Escritores , where she wrote her first novel Mejor desaparece under the supervision of Juan Rulfo .

In 1983, together with her then partner Alejandro Aura, she started the El Cuervo cultural initiative . Since 1987, under the new name El Hijo del Cuervo, theatrical performances, poetry readings, dance and music events of all kinds have taken place on the square of Coyoacán . In 1991 she received a scholarship from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation .

She currently (2007) lives and works with her partner and Pulitzer Prize winner Mike Wallace in New York.
