Rosario Ferré

Rosario J. Ferré Ramírez de Arellano (born September 28, 1938 in Ponce , Puerto Rico , † February 18, 2016 ) was a Puerto Rican writer and scientist.

Life

Ferré came from one of the most powerful families on the island, a respected former family of landowners and politicians: Her father, Luis A. Ferré , was governor of Puerto Rico from 1968 to 1972; Her grandfather, a Frenchman, had come to America with Ferdinand de Lesseps and stayed there when his Panama Canal project collapsed. Because of this “historical burden”, Rosario seemed destined for the existence of an elegant lady of the “high society”, but began to give up these securities early on in favor of a literary career. Ferré began writing soon after the death of her mother, Lorenza Ramírez de Arellano, from whom she had inherited enough to start her own business. After her divorce, she finally broke with her middle-class environment. She wrote several children's books for her three children from her first marriage. Since 1995 she has been writing partly in English , which is the official language of Puerto Rico alongside Spanish .

Rosario Ferré studied English and Latin American literature (Masters at the Universidad de Puerto Rico, Ph.D. at the University of Maryland , USA). Between 1972 and 1976 she founded and directed one of the most important literary magazines in her country, Zona de carga y descarga . She has received various literary prizes for her literary works, including “El Ateneo de Puerto Rico” and the renowned “Premio Casa de las Américas” (Cuba). In 2007, after a long stay in Washington, she lived again in Puerto Rico, where she was a professor at the Universidad de Puerto Rico. She has taught at various universities in the United States , including Harvard University , Johns Hopkins University and the University of California at Berkeley .

The literary work of Rosario Ferré is characterized above all by the deliberate resumption and parody of established discourses , the rewriting and rewriting of myths of the feminine contained in fairy tales, films, etc., prototypically her story “La Bella Durmiente” (Sleeping Beauty). It is based on a historical Puerto Rican figure, the prostitute Isabel Luberza, who had amassed enormous wealth with her trade and had just been murdered at the time.
