Cristina Peri Rossi (born November 12, 1941 in Montevideo ) is a Uruguayan writer, translator and journalist.

Life

Cristina Peri Rossi studied music and biology in Montevideo, among other things, and was then a lecturer in comparative literature and a member of the Marcha magazine . In 1972, when she had already made a name for herself as a writer in her home country with five publications, she fled to Barcelona from the increasing oppression (state of emergency due to urban guerrilla Tupamaros ) . Until then, she had never left her home country. In 1980 she lived in Berlin for a year at the invitation of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) . Poems were written here that were later published in "Europa después de la lluvia". Since 1975 she has had both Uruguayan and Spanish citizenship .

She often writes in the first person singular, with the first person figure in prose mostly being male. In poetry, the gender can be male or female, or it is not recognizable. Sometimes it changes within a volume of poetry ("Diáspora"). There is no gender ambiguity behind this, but the conviction that desire, central in poetry from the beginning, and later also in prose, has no gender. Some volumes of poetry are explicitly about lesbian love (e.g. "Estrategias del amor"). The experience of exile and a learned, often nostalgic look at past centuries are other recurring themes. In addition, there are descriptions of phenomena in everyday life or western everyday culture that are either humorous or fantastic. In these texts, influences from Franz Kafka and Julio Cortázar can be seen . In some of her stories, Peri Rossi processed her experiences with the dictatorship in metaphorical form; here, too, her anger is clearly expressed in a surreal or satirical representation, although the form of her political position sometimes resembles that of Ursula K. Le Guins or Christiane Rochefort in literary terms .

Peri Rossi also works as a translator from other Romance languages , especially from contemporary authors such as the Brazilian Clarice Lispector . In 2019 she was awarded the Premio Iberoamericano de Letras José Donoso by the University of Talca (Chile).
