The Custodian helmet ( English as:. "Overseer helmet") is the typical headgear of the British police . It is mainly worn by ankle stripes and then only by men up to the rank of sergeant .

The helmet has been introduced to police units in England and Wales , but not in Scotland and Northern Ireland . The helmet is also worn by the police units of the British Transport Police , the Ministry of Defense Police in England and Wales, the police on the islands of Jersey , Guernsey and Isle of Man , in Gibraltar and Bermuda .

The helmet was introduced by the Metropolitan Police in 1863 to replace the cylinder previously worn .

The helmet is made of cork and is covered with felt . He also has a cap ribbon. Either a helmet comb, a ball or a simple hump is attached to the top of the helmet. In 23 of the 43 police districts this is currently the ridge, in 18 the hump and in only four districts the ball. Helmets with pimples are no longer used.

The helmet also has a chin strap, although this is not used by most police officers.

Except for the police of the City of London , Hampshire and West Mercia, the Stern von Braunschweig , a traditional coat of arms in Great Britain, is used as the coat of arms on the helmets .

Similar helmets were worn in Australia and New Zealand , but have now been retired.
