SAID ( Persian سعید[ sæˈiːd ]; * May 27, 1947 in Tehran ; † May 15, 2021 in Munich ; civil: Said Mirhadi , stage name in capital letters) was an Iranian-German writer .

Life

In 1965 SAID came to Munich as a student at the age of seventeen . Here he studied political science . After the overthrow of the Shah in 1979, he briefly went to Iran . The theocracy newly established there by the mullahs, however, prompted him to return to German exile . He received German citizenship and wrote poetry and prose in German , which he mastered in all their nuances and understood them as his "dwelling".

SAID's main themes were love and exile. He has received several awards for his literary work, but also for his commitment to the politically persecuted. SAID was a member and from 1995 to 1996 Vice President and from 2000 to 2002 President of the PEN Center Germany , whose representative he was temporarily also for the Writers in Prison Committee (from 1995 to 1996). In addition to his own work, he was committed to Persian literature and mediated between authors and publishers for decades.

In May 2021, SAID died of a heart attack at the age of 73.
