The prize was awarded in the Allerheiligenhofkirche in Munich.

The Adelbert von Chamisso Prize of the Robert Bosch Foundation was awarded from 1985 to 2017 (until 2005 together with the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts , since 2006 by the Robert Bosch Foundation alone). The literature award honored the German-language, already published work by authors who are of non-German language origin, as was Adelbert von Chamisso . The main prize was endowed with 15,000 euros (2017).

In addition, up to two prizes were awarded, in which unpublished texts were also taken into account; they were each endowed with 7,000 euros.

Since 1997, the foundation has also awarded (non-endowed) honorary gifts for the Adelbert von Chamisso Prize at irregular intervals to personalities who have made a special contribution to the Chamisso Prize through their life's work .

The new award winners were announced annually at the Frankfurt Book Fair . The award ceremony took place in Munich in February or March (since 2005 in the Allerheiligen-Hofkirche of the Munich Residence, 1985 to 2004 in the ballroom of the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts). Since 2009 the winners have been presented in a separate magazine called "Chamisso", which was published with the award.

The established term "Chamisso literature" (possibly still neologism ) is differentiated from the so-called guest worker literature , it was said when the 2007 award winners were announced.

After 33 years, the Adelbert von Chamisso Prize was awarded for the last time in March 2017 because the project was discontinued by the Robert Bosch Foundation.

The Chamisso Prize / Hellerau has been awarded by an alliance of associations, companies and cultural actors in Dresden since 2018 .
