Akos Doma (* 1963 in Budapest ) is a German writer and translator of Hungarian origin.

childhood and education

Akos Doma grew up in Hungary . He emigrated with his parents to England via Italy before he came to Amberg at the age of 14 . In 1984 he graduated from the Erasmus-Gymnasium in Amberg. Doma then studied English , American and German studies in Munich for two years . In 1986 he moved to the Catholic University of Eichstätt . In 1994 he received his doctorate on “The other modern. Knut Hamsun, DHLawrence and the philosophical current of literary modernism ” .

Writer and translator

His debut novel "Der Müßiggänger" was published in 2001 by Rotbuch Verlag. In addition to his work as a writer, Doma translates works by László F. Földényi , Péter Nádas , Béla Hamvas and Sándor Márai from Hungarian into German. He has received several awards for his translations, including the Luise Adelgunde Victorie Gottsched grant (2011). He was a scholarship holder of the Künstlerhaus Lauenburg (2006), the Foundation Künstlerdorf Schöppingen (2007, 2010) and the Schleswig-Holsteinischer Künstlerhaus Eckernförde (2010).

Doma was awarded an Adelbert von Chamisso Prize for his novel "Die Allgemeine Tauglichkeit" , published in 2011 . The jury stated that he was creating "a modern rogue comedy in a linguistically refined and extraordinarily funny way". The novel was nominated for the Independent Publishers' Hotlist Prize and won its internet vote. In 2012 Doma was elected Dresden City Clerk , in 2013 he received the Spreewald Literature Scholarship as well as scholarships in the Stuttgart Writer 's House (2013) and in the Heinrich-Heine-House Lüneburg (2014). In the same year he was awarded the Prague Literature Scholarship and a Literature Scholarship from the Free State of Bavaria in 2014 for the "outstanding literary quality of his work". For 2015 he received a scholarship from the German Study Center in Venice. His third novel "The Way of Desires" made it onto the longlist for the German Book Prize . In 2019 he was town clerk for Rheinsberg. In 2020 the book "In Praise of Melancholy" by László F. Földényi , which he had translated, received the Leipzig Book Prize for European Understanding.

Private

Doma lives with his family in Eichstätt.
