Stuttgart Writer's House, Kanalstrasse 4

Coordinates: 48 ° 46 ′ 30.4 ″  N , 9 ° 10 ′ 59 ″  E The Stuttgart Writer's House is a cultural institution in Stuttgart's Bohnenviertel . It serves as a meeting point for authors , translators and those interested in literature. Events, conferences and writing workshops takeplace regularly. The Writers' House has accommodated up to four scholarship holders every year since 1984. German-speaking authors from Germany and abroad are given the opportunity to work in a historic urban setting and present their own work to an interested audience.

History of the building

The listed building at Kanalstrasse 4 is from the 17th century. The poet Johannes Poethen and the architect Johannes Wetzel were able to convince the Lord Mayor of the City of Stuttgart Manfred Rommel and the Prime Minister of Baden-Württemberg Lothar Späth not to demolish the house as part of the old town redevelopment, but to use it as a cultural institution. The house was extensively renovated and on October 4, 1983 as the Stuttgarter Writer's House, the Verein Stuttgarter Schriftstellerhaus e. V. handed over for use. The four-story house has an almost square floor plan and is 4.98 meters wide.

Stuttgarter Writer's Association e. V.

The owner of the Stuttgart Writer's House is the Stuttgarter Writer's Association e. V. A managing director has looked after the scholarship holders since 1987 and coordinates the activities of the Writers' House. Astrid Braun is the current managing director. Predecessors included Irene Ferchl and Ingrid Bussmann .

According to the statutes, it is the responsibility of the association

  • to promote literature
  • to maintain the premises of the Writers' House
  • to hold public events with writers
  • to provide for the care and accommodation of the writers' guests and scholarship holders
  • To enable working meetings of writing organizations

The association currently has around 70 members (as of September 2019).

Activities and projects

Scholarship holders

The Stuttgart Writer's House regularly awards 3-month face-to-face scholarships.

The scholarships are divided into

  • Scholarships for authors of books for children and young people
  • Scholarships for authors (prose, drama) These scholarships are funded by the State Capital Stuttgart and the Ministry for Science, Research and Art Baden-Württemberg (State of Baden-Württemberg)
  • Scholarships for poets (poetry) These scholarships are financed from the legacy of Ruth Theil , the honorary chairwoman of the Stuttgart Writers' House, who died in 2017
  • Grants for translators (this category has not been offered since 2016)

The scholarship holders receive prize money and live in a small apartment on the top floor of the writer's house. It was furnished with period furniture by Klett-Cotta-Verlag . Although the standard of the apartment is simple and the location is not quiet, the Writers' House is a popular place for writers. The technical equipment has been adapted to current requirements over the years.

The scholarship holders are expected to introduce themselves to the Stuttgart literary audience and to participate regularly in the blog Kanalstrasse 4 .

Stuttgart is reading a book

Since 2012, the Stuttgart Writer's House has initiated the literature festival “Stuttgart reads a book” every two to three years. The aim is to encourage as many residents of a city as possible to read a book, accompanied by numerous cultural events that can be related to the respective book.

The project goes back to an idea from Chicago : "One city - one book". In Germany, Frankfurt am Main , Cologne , Hamburg and Düsseldorf have also carried out corresponding projects.

The following books have been read in Stuttgart so far:

In the Stuttgart version of this concept, emphasis is placed on the work of a contemporary, German-speaking author. The work and the author should offer starting points for events for as many institutions in the city as possible. The book is intended to appeal to all generations and social classes. A large planning group from Stuttgart's cultural institutions under the leadership of the Writers' House is responsible for the discussion of proposals and the planning of the festival.

Literature in the salon

In some years, readings are organized by young authors in private apartments in Stuttgart. Groups of up to 25 people are invited to a reading in suitable private apartments. The last such event took place in 2018 under the motto "She writes ...".

The young writer's house

Under this title, the Stuttgart Writer's House offers a writing workshop for young authors from Stuttgart and the surrounding area.

The Poetry Night

In cooperation with the Literaturhaus Stuttgart and the Stuttgart City Library, a poetry night takes place once a year. Contemporary German-language poets are invited to read their texts.

Premises

The ground floor is available for events and meetings of all kinds. The room is often used for authors' round tables, translators round tables and workshop discussions.

In addition to the apartment on the 4th floor, there are two guest rooms in the Writer's House on the 1st floor, where writers and other artists who are passing through are welcome. The literary critic Denis Scheck also found temporary accommodation there in his youth.

Networking

Through the networking of the important Stuttgart literary institutions (Writer's House, Literaturhaus Stuttgart and Stuttgart City Library ), literary festivals such as “Stuttgart reads a book” or “The Stuttgart Lyriknacht” can be carried out very successfully with great public participation.

The Stuttgart Writers' House has been a member of the Working Group of Literary Societies since 2010 .

In addition to the Stuttgart Writers' House Association. V., the Writers' House is also home to the Circle of Friends for the Promotion of Literary and Scientific Translations. V. and the board of the Association of German Writers (VS) Baden-Württemberg . The authors' association also meets at Kanalstrasse 4.

Publications

Between 1990 and 2003, the Stuttgart Writer's House published an almanac with texts by scholarship holders and other authors who have a connection to the institution. The first four volumes were published by Silberburg-Verlag , Volume 5 in Edition Peter Schlack, Stuttgart. To mark the 25th anniversary of the Writer's House, the anthology Zur Zeit was published in 2008 in the in-house edition of Edition Kanalstrasse 4 .

The following books were also published in the Edition Kanalstrasse 4 series :

  • Helmut Pfisterer : The Pascha sits in his lookout and looks at a place . 2013. Helmut Pfisterer was a founding member of the Writers' House.
  • Moritz Heger , Christian Lang: Light gray . 2017.
