Jurgis Kunčinas

Jurgis Kunčinas (born January 13, 1947 in Alytus , † December 13, 2002 in Vilnius ) was a Lithuanian writer, translator and German studies specialist.

Life

Jurgis Kunčinas studied German at Vilnius University , but was forcibly de-registered in 1968 when he refused to take compulsory military studies. He had to do his military service in the Soviet Air Force . He then worked as a translator for newspapers and as an educator in a workers' dormitory, as a transport worker and nurse, in a weather station and as a tour guide.

Works

From 1977 he published six volumes of poetry, seven volumes of short prose as well as essays and six novels. Since the 1980s he has worked as a freelance writer and translator and translated books by Günter Grass , Heinrich Böll , Friedrich Dürrenmatt , Siegfried Lenz and Hans Fallada into Lithuanian.

His works have been translated into English, Russian, Latvian, Swedish, Estonian, Polish, Belarusian and German; the library in his hometown now bears his name.
