Kristiane Lichtenfeld

Kristiane Lichtenfeld (* 1944 in Neustettin ) is a German Slavist and translator . She translates novels and plays from Russian , Polish and Georgian into German .

Education

Lichtenfeld studied Slavic Studies at the Humboldt University in Berlin with a focus on Russian and Polish . She graduated there in 1968 and supplemented her education with a subsequent additional degree at the University of Warsaw .

After graduating, Lichtenfeld worked as an editor and lecturer for Polish literature and the national literature of the USSR in the Aufbau-Verlag and the Volk und Welt publishing house . Since 1980 she has been a freelance literary translator from Polish and Russian.

Lichtenfeld discovered for himself that Georgia was "the most beautiful country in the Soviet Union". So she began self-taught Georgian studies and exploring the country in Tbilisi (Georgia). She later made further trips to Georgia and the Silk Roads of Central Asia . Through her translations, she developed the need for more extensive cultural mediation .

Lichtenfeld took part in translators' congresses in Warsaw. She was also a participant in the Ilia Chavchavadze Conference in Tbilisi.

In 1999 she received the Matschabeli Translation Prize of the Georgian Writers' Union, and in 2015 the Georgian Saba Literature Prize. Because Georgia became the partner country of the Frankfurt Book Fair in 2018 , some of the books that Lichtenfeld had translated in the past have been reprinted. Others have been re-translated.

In addition to her translation work, she also works for radio .

Lichtenfeld is organized in the European College of Translators (EÜK) Straelen . She was named Translator in Residence in 2007 by the College of Translators . The translators, who are newly appointed every year, give lectures to give an insight into their respective specialist areas and their working methods.

Private

Lichtenfeld has lived in Berlin since 1953.
