Oleksiy Lohwynenko

Oleksij Potapowytsch Lohwynenko ( Ukrainian Олексій Потапович Логвиненко , also Oleksiy / Oleks / Olexij Logvynenko / Logvinenko ; born March 31, 1946 in Towmatsch , Ukrainian SSR ; died January 18, 2016 in Kiev. He was a Ukrainian translator and several English-language works translated into Ukrainian. He has translated works by Robert Musil , Cornelia Funke , Günter Grass , Elias Canetti , Wilhelm Raabe , Max Frisch , Franz Kafka , Peter Handke Hermann Hesse , Erwin Strittmatter and Siegfried Lenz from German .

Youth and education

Oleksij Lohwynenko was born in 1946 in the small village of Towmach in Cherkassy Oblast . He studied from 1965 to 1970 at the Institute for Foreign Languages ​​with a focus on German at the National Taras-Shevchenko University of Kiev .

translator

After graduating, Lohwynenko worked as a proofreader , editor and editor-in-chief for various publishing houses. He worked on the monthly magazine for world literature Wseswit (dt. The whole world ). From 1992 to 1998 he was executive director of the newly founded publishing house for translation literature Osnovy (German: Basics ). He has translated into Ukrainian over 50 books by German and English speaking authors. He has also worked with translations for magazines, television, radio and the theater.

Since 1982 he was a member of the Ukrainian Writers' Union .

Since 1999 Lohwynenko has been working as a freelancer. In 2002 he received a presence scholarship at the Writer's House in Stuttgart . In 2008 he took part in an international translation workshop that is regularly organized jointly by the Robert Bosch Foundation and the Berlin Literary Colloquium .

In 2001 Lohwynenko took part in a reading of Ukrainian literature at the Solothurn Literature Days.

He was a regular guest of the European College of Translators (EÜK), was able to work in peace and had a huge library available there:

  • in several stays from 2007 to 2009 he worked on the translation of Robert Musil's The Man Without Qualities
  • In 2010 he was Translator in Residence in Straelen for three months , completing the translation of Robert Musil's The Man Without Qualities
  • In 2011 he translated stories and letters by Franz Kafka
  • In 2012 he translated The Death of Virgil by Hermann Broch
  • In 2013 he translated The Robber by Robert Walser
  • In 2014/2015 he translated Carl Spitteler's novel Imago as well as poems and a short story by Spitteler.

Private

Oleksiy Lohwynenko lived in Kiev and died in 2016.
