Working group of literary societies and memorials

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Working Group of Literary Societies and Memorials eV (ALG) is a non-profit umbrella association of German literary societies and literary museums founded in 1986 .

History, developments, area of responsibility

In 1986, the year it was founded, 26 literary societies came together in an umbrella organization. The change and the mutual rapprochement of the literary societies created the prerequisites for their amalgamation in a working group, which in turn accelerated the process of rapprochement and cooperation.

In 1998 the ALG expanded its area of responsibility. Since 1999, literary museums and literary memorials have also been able to join the umbrella organization. Over 200 members now use the ALG offer. The majority are literary societies with a total of over 75,000 members throughout Germany and abroad. Extending the well-functioning network between the literary societies to include the literary museums - after all, there are well over 200 in Germany - remains an essential goal of the working group. Networking is necessary in order to make better use of human and financial resources.

Literary projects and public presentation

In addition to promoting literary projects, the ALG focuses on a large number of other tasks. As an umbrella organization, the working group has taken on the task of presenting the existence of the various associations and literary museums to the public. The newsletters that appear twice a year, annual general meetings and irregular working seminars on various topics serve the exchange of experiences and cooperation between the members. The ALG Umschau newsletter, managed by the office, provides information on the current activities of the literary societies and literary museums; Projects are announced and documented in the event calendar.

Publications

The ALG publications deal with topics that are of particular interest to the work of the societies and museums. Two conference volumes should be emphasized which deal with the conception and development of literary museums. There is also an overview published by the ALG.

Association work

The Hartmut Vogel Prize is awarded every two years by the ALG .

The ALG receives project funds from the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and Media Affairs (BKM) and from the State of Berlin .

As a member of the Federal Network for Civic Engagement (BBE), the ALG has committed itself to the sustainable promotion of civic engagement, because the majority of the associations are run and maintained by volunteer members. Above all, the board members of the individual associations are committed to their societies and museums. The institutions not only contribute to the cultural life of their region . With little financial means and a lot of personal contribution, regular cultural programs are carried out throughout the Federal Republic that would not take place without the literary associations.

The working group is a member of the German Literature Conference , which represents the literature section in the German Cultural Council, and is also a member of the International Committee for Literary Museums (ICLM) in the International Council of Museums (ICOM), the international umbrella organization for all museums.

The chairman of the board is Hans Wißkirchen ( Lübeck ), the managing director is Christiane Kussin.
