German Schiller Society

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The German Schiller Society e. V. (DSG) is an association of people at home and abroad who feel connected to Friedrich Schiller's work and literature in general. It is responsible for the Schiller National Museum and the German Literature Archive Marbach with the Modern Literature Museum . It is based in Marbach am Neckar . It has 3700 members (as of April 14, 2008) , making it one of the largest literary societies in Germany.

It was founded in 1895 as the Swabian Schiller Club , and in 1947 it took its current name.

goals and tasks

The purpose of the association was originally to "promote knowledge of Schiller's work, his person and his ideas and to establish an archive and museum in Marbach for this purpose " (preamble to the statutes), which was established in 1903. This included the entire Swabian literature in its collecting, scientific and popular education activities. The association went public with publications, exhibitions, lectures and other events. With the expansion of the collections, the Schiller National Museum developed into an archive of more recent German literature in a broader sense. The society complied with this in 1955 with the establishment of the German Literature Archive on the initiative of the museum director at the time, Bernhard Zeller .

As the sponsor of the Schiller National Museum and the German Literature Archive with the Museum of Modern Literature , it manages these institutes, expands the collections and makes them accessible to the public. In addition, its main tasks are to maintain, research and communicate newer German literature and to keep Schiller's intellectual legacy alive. (Articles of Association § 2).

The German Literature Archive Marbach, as the institutions of the German Schiller Society are commonly called, was evaluated by the Science Council in 2007. Its scientific policy statement calls for the activities of the German Literature Archive in Marbach to focus on core tasks and to expand and secure the institutional funding of the facilities.

history

The Marbacher Schiller Club had existed since 1835 , from which the Swabian Schiller Club emerged in 1895 . This is still a branch of the German Schiller Society and is represented on its committee .

The history and development of the German Schiller Society are inextricably linked with the history and development of the Schiller National Museum and the German Literature Archive . They are presented in detail in the article Deutsches Literaturarchiv Marbach .

The Weimarer Schillerverein e. V. is also represented on the committee as a legally independent branch of the German Schiller Society.
